Re: What? Midlands?
Moreno (ISU - Unattached) beat the 9 seed to advance in the consolation! Good stuff!

Gibson pins the 11 seed.
Simonson pinned by the 7 seed.
Pretty good day for our guys. 5 scorers still alive with 3 in the semis.
Moreno showing he will be a force at some point in his career.

Re: What? Midlands?
Definitely a good day for Iowa State wrestling. Almost everyone is wrestling at or above their seed and we are winning lots of matches in the closing seconds and OT. I wish we didn't have so many guys injured but I'm loving what Jackson is getting out of the guys he does have on the mat.
Team scores at the end of Day One:
1. Lehigh 65
2. Wisconsin 58 1/2
3. Iowa 52 1/2
4. Pitt 49 1/2 5. IOWA STATE 49
6. Missouri 48 1/2
7. Central Michigan 43
8. Maryland 41 1/2
9. Nebraska 37 1/2
10. Clarion 35
Considering the number of points we are missing out on due to injury, and that one of our guys in the semi's is redshirting so is unattached and not scoring us any points, I'd say we're doing a hell of a job. If Moreno wasn't unattached we'd be in the hunt for first.

wow. that is impressive. after seeing the list of guys that were out for us, i thought top 10 MAYBE. this is a nice surprise-hope kj can keep it going in a week at national duals. who are we missing for scorers again?-ward, sorenson, who else?

I think KJ can use this meet as a teaching point and stress that if we can do this good at Midlands missing half the team, we can be a threat at Nationals if everyone focuses and wrestles like they are capable of.

If available, I think we would have scored Ward instead of Hawes, and Sorenson instead of Mayfield or Cash for sure. I'm not sure if we could have scored Finch while he is redshirting, but if so, I think you would have seen him scoring instead of Cash/Mayfield. I think if we had those 3 and they performed anywhere close to expectations, we're in 3rd right now, and maybe better.
It'll be interesting to see what happens at 165 now. Sorenson is sitting out to let his high ankle sprain heal completely before national duals, but aside from Reader he has been our biggest bright spot this season. Now you have Spangler looking great. It looked to be Sorenson's spot before this tournament, but you have to think KJ opens this back up again. I have no idea how these two match up in the room. I wish we had this kind of depth at one of the lower weights where we could really use it.

Re: What? Midlands?
Time to start day two! We've got six guys (five scorers) still in this and with a good day we'll be in the top three at least. Go Cyclones!

Re: What? Midlands?
Moreno and Carr lost in consos and will not place. Apparently Carr has been cutting a ton of weight this year though.

But moreno wasn't scoring for us anyway right?

It's all about managing the cut (easy for me to say as my bloated Christmas belly sits in my chair). I hate to think what McDonough from Iowa is cutting down from and he's probably the best pound for pound wrestler in the country right now. Closer to home, I know for a fact that Sorenson was walking around at close to 200 lbs this summer and he's been a beast at 165 on a bum ankle. If Carr controls his weight and stays away from the big swings, he can be a real sleeper at 149. If his weight is going to yo-yo, he won't be a factor at all.

I've been where Carr is (I had to cut ~20pounds a week my senior year of high school). It wasn't fat weight, it was all water weight. When you get down the the ~5% BFC, it becomes really hard to not balloon with water weight.

I didn't see who beat him out, but staying on the top side was the key for him as they had been some upsets that put some tough guys in the losers' bracket at 149.

Re: What? Midlands?
And this squad is rated #20 in the last poll?
Clone to the Bone with the up and coming IOWA STATE. -
