I would assume it would have something to do w/ your school entering a wrestler at that weight at the conf meet..... A situation like that is part of why they changed to the new qualifying rules. I think what you would have to do in a situation like that is make weight but then default all of your matches.
In other words, if Sorenson is hurt they could have him weigh in but default his matches, but they can't put Spangler out there and then sub Sorenson back in for NCAAs.

Correct. You must wrestle at least 1 sec of the qualifying tournament to be eligible for a wild card. I don't think Spangler or Slifka are even eligible to be considered for a wild card. (I don't think they meet enough criteria)

Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions
So the Cyclone website is all screwed up and every single bracket goes to 197 pounds. So I can't post the seeding like I had hoped.
Well, except for 197.
197 is:
1) Clayton Foster (OSU)
2( Andy Johnson (Nebraska)
3) Jerome Ward (Iowa State)
4) Brent Haynes (Missouri)
5) Keldrink Hall (Oklahoma)
Cyclones.com won't let me look at 165 or heavy though, which are the ones I am concerned about!

Note that Spangler is in at 165, but Simonson weighed in at heavy.
Anybody know what happened to Sorenson? Since we aren't in the team race I'd hate to think that Jackson threw him out there just because he might score us some points. What kind of injury takes four weeks (last wee, this week, and 2 weeks to NCAAs) to heal?
I have high hopes for Spangler next season, but for this season, Sorenson has won the spot, so it he doesn't have a broken arm.leg or a torn ligament I'd be disappointed with the decision not to let him wrestle at the NCAAs (sincewe have already auto qualified 5 at 165)

Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions
I am about 90% sure Sorenson is done. I haven't personally talked to him in a few weeks, but thats what I have been hearing.
How do tickets work for this thing? Can you just get them at the door? Anyone know how much?

Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions
141 is the only weight I didn't have correct (not counting Spangler). with Koehnlein and Kindig switched. At 141 Spangler got the 4th seed where I had given Sorenson the 3rd seed.
4th vs. 5th doesn't matter at all match wise, but it is nice to see that our backup 165 pounder was seeded higher than the #10 ranked guy in the nation.

By done do you mean for his year, or period? I was really hoping to see him and Spangler split 165/174 next year.

Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions
Minor point to add -- you can actually win 1 match and still take 5th place if you're the 4th or 5th seed. Unless I totally misremember from previous years.
May my postings be polite and not misunderstood. (And hopefully funny on occasion.) -

It's the conference as a whole that earns the automatic bids based on wrestlers' performances, and the conference uses the tournament to decide who to send in those automatic spots, and then the NCAA figures out wildcards. Otherwise, why wouldn't the NCAA just give the bid to the wrestler that earned it, without regard for the tournament?
But again, I don't actually know.

Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions
Here's how we stand so far...
At 125 Jones lost 7-6 to Klingsheim of Nebraska in the pigtail.
At 133 Cash beet McKormick 9-6 but then lost to Oliver. As long as Kiley beats McCormick in their match Cash will qualify for sure I believe. If McCormick beats Kiley and then beats Cash for 3th then he'll have to wrestle Kiley for that last slot.
At 141 Drioun lost to Schavrien 3-6. Still can qualify with a single win today
At 149 Mayfield won over Grande from Nebraska 2-1 in overtime but lost 7-4 to Parts from OSU. He can still get third, but with only one qualifier I don't see him getting a wild card.
at 157 Weatherman beat Koehn from Nebraska 3-2 but lost to Erisman 4-12. He also can still get third, but with only one qualifier won't be going to the NCAAs.
At 165 Spangler beat Bailey from OSU but then had his third loss of the year to Buroughs. He will qualify.
At 174 Reader got a major decision and is in the finals
At 184 Shafar pinned Larson but lost to Perry. He is in a similar situation to Cash and may or may not need another win to qualify.
At 197 Ward bear Johnson from Nebraska 3-2 and is in the finals.
At Heavy Simonson beat Rosholt 2-1 but then lost to Bradley. He is in the same spot as Cash and Shafer for qualifying.
2 guys in the finals. 7 guys still alive to qualify. We got the upsets we needed at 133, 184, and Heavy, but the day isn't over yet.

Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions
McCormick won at 133, so Cash will face him again. With a win he will qualify. With a loss he wrestles Kiley of NU for true 4th and that last spot to Philly.
Kinda sucks for Cash since if Kiley had won that match he'd be assured of a spot win or lose.
-
Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions
Schmiddke beats Larson at 184. So Shafer has qualified win or lose.
-
Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions
Lane beat Rosholt at Heavy. So Simonson is also in win or lose
So Spangler (165), Reader (174), Shafer (184), Ward (197), and Simonson (285) are going to Philly.
Cash needs to either beat McCormick a second time or beat Kiley to go to Philly.
Drioun is our one disappointment of the day. He needs Kindig to lose to Koehnlein (Kindig won over Kohnlein with a fall in the pigtails), and then to beat Kindig. Drioun would have a very good shot at a wildcard if this doesn't happen.

Re: Big 12 Preview/Predictions
Cash just lost 0-5 to McCormick. He'll be wrestling Kiley for that last spot.
Cash lost to Kiley 0-3 in the dual two weeks ago. But he also lost to McCormick by a major in the dual and was able to get that win. Keep your fingers crossed.
