I do think that KJ and Co. majorly underachieved last year with all the seniors. But, he lost a ton of talent last year, and this year is definitely a rebuilding year. If we look like this in two years, he should be on the hot seat...but not now...
In Fred, we trust!! Go Cyclones! -

It really comes down to recruiting. Just like bball, if we recruit like MVC we are going nowhere. If we recruit like Big 12, we can do it.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

losses from last years roster:
runner up at 125(long) kicked off team
4 year starter at 133(fanthorpe)graduated
#1 ranked at 141(gallick)graduated
top backup at 141 and ncaa qualifier(jensen)transfer
4 year starter at 149(mueller)graduated
2 year starter at 174(burk)graduated
top backup at 184(beard)went to play baseball
ncaa champ at 197(varner)graduated
ncaa champ at hwt(zabriskie)graduated
couple that with losing 1 year of recruiting due to caels departure, and what did anyone expect this year.
thats 70% of our starters, and our top 2 backups at 2 weights. imagine that kind of attrition in football or basketball. would you expect a top 10 finish? i know it's kjs job to figure this stuff out, but it would have taken a goddamn miracle to overcome this year.
realistic expectations-top 10 next year, top 5 the year after, competing for a title the year after. if that doesn't happen, then i agree it's time to start talking, but until then, i hope all the neighsayers do a little research before spewing crap.

I wouldn't count him out if I were you.

Let's be honest: This wouldn't be near as big of a deal if a certain program to the East hadn't lost just as much as we did--if not more--yet they still find themselves in title contention this season. That's the elephant in the room here.
And as for Shafer, yes I think that is fair. His overall record is not good and I thus I can't see him doing much at the tourney. Everyone at the tourney has some nice wins.

Iowa did not lose anywhere near as much as we did. The situations don't even remotely compare. We lost not only one of our best graduating classes ever, but also the recruits who were supposed to replace them, and Long.
As for Shafer, his draw is going to determine how he does. With a tough draw he'll go 0-2, but with a good draw there's no reason he can't go 1-2 or 2-2. He won't be a threat to AA or anything, but he might score us some points.

Let's not forget to congratulate Jon Reader on a dominating performance. Big 12 Champion with 2 Major Decisions. Ward also wrestled admirably, upsetting the #2 seed and making it to the finals.

They didn't lose the backups but they also didn't have anything that resembles our dropoff.
As for Shafer, he's going to get a terrible draw. He will be unseeded and face someone tough right off the bat. Sure, he can win a match...maybe.

Re: FOUR CYCLONES EARN AUTOMATIC BIDS TO NCAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Iowa's young new faces in their lineup this year have looked way more ready to step in after redshirting than our guys and have improved more during the season.

Iowa has depth. We have none. We can't afford any injuries. Heck, our starters at 125 and 133 are depth guys. You can even say that about 184 and 149. KJ is getting some studs (Finch, Gadsen, Moreno, Pena, Tanner Weatherman, Cozart), but is also building depth (Riley, Sorenson, Schlosser, Jones, Voelker, England). We need this so when these guys become Juniors and Seniors some are going to develop into AA's. And if injuries occur, we will have a competitive guy to step in.
