Thanks for posting the list Captain. Do I read it right that we had NINE WRESTLERS finish 6th or higher nationally in 1969? Unbelieveable.

The way I read the list, we had 10 finish 6th or higher in 1969.

1969 Jason Smith 167 3rd
1969 Steve Lampe 115 6th

I'd Say Cael 184 and Varner 197, or vice versa.

From the ISU archives: Ben Peterson is one of the finest wrestlers in Cyclone history, capturing two NCAA titles and three Big Eight championships. The Comstock, Wis., native wrestled at Iowa State from 1969-72, helping ISU earned two national championships and one second-place finish. Peterson won the gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. At the 1976 Olypmics Montreal, Peterson captured the silver medal. Peterson is the only ISU wrestler to win two medals in Olympic competition. He is also the only Cyclone and just the fourth U.S. wrestler to be named to three Olympic teams when he was selected to compete in the 1980 Moscow Games.

Once Varner reaches that Olympics gold medal podium, then he can be compared to Peterson.

Nichols was at the top of the game in 1969. The football team was gaining strength under Johnny Majors. It would be great for both teams to return to those heights at the same time, and soon.

Smith is referenced twice--I think because the first was a typo, and is really where he finished the year before. But whether 9 or 10--spectacular.
