I agree. Wrestling blows.
I agree. Wrestling blows.
And reading your reasoning you are a very uninformed person who should probably not be allowed to post. Among other things, half the "no name" schools you posted are wrestling powerhouses, and half our lineup was down with injury this weekend, including two guys who were injured but gritted it out to end their matches.
You should apologize to any team members or recruits who happen to read this board for such a bad and willfully ignorant post. I am sad that you consider yourself a Cycolne fan.
Looks like a consensus has been reached. Lock.
My question is, for what purpose should the wrestling program be dropped? If the program is dropped, where do you propose the funds should be directed?
How can the tradition be gone? after one or two seasons.
....kill the sport where we have national championships?
Wouldn't it be better if we dropped the OP?
Wrestling at ISU has huge support from the alums and I would love it if we had a financial arrangement that rivaled Iowa's. Iowa State Wrestling needs to develop a foundation that is self sustaining, and will survive regardless of athletic department budgets.
I believe that ISU Wrestling is already receiving a lot of funds sent directly to the AD for the specific purpose of supporting Wrestling. These are not general donations, they are directed funds to the intended sport.
That said, the next step is to make Wrestling a self sufficient sport. If we can make enough of a collective endowment, wrestling can live off the interest and never touch the principal amount invested. This is the model that the Squakeyes have turned into success. They stole our legend. We can steal their economic model - and do it better.
ISU wrestling should not be dropped - it should be a signature sport. ISU can make it happen if they want to. ISU alums and fans can make it happen if they want to. It doesn't take billions of dollars - it can become reality with a few big donations and a ton of smaller donations. We just have to do it.
Problem is the marketing people. They'll want to make a GIANT fund drive and soak up 75% of the money collected. We'll have to go grass roots and just find an honest person in the AD to wisely collect and invest the funds. IF this can still happen in this day and age, ISU Wrestling be viable forever.
Disclaimer: I know very, very little about our (or any other wrestling program beyond the facts of Cael Sanderson, and we seemed to pretty much have been the school to beat at some point.
With that said, where would you suggest we re-direct those funds? Our powerhouse football team? Our perennial favorite men's basketball team?
And someone can feel free to correct me, but didn't we just land a big-time recruit? To me that says the program is rebuilding vs. dying.
