ANDY HAMILTON'S MEET PREVIEW
=== 125 POUNDS === WHO: Matt McDonough (Iowa) vs. Ryak Finch (ISU) ABOUT McDONOUGH: Junior from Marion, Ia. Ranked No. 1. ABOUT FINCH: Freshman from Safford, Ariz. Ranked No. 10. THE SKINNY: McDonough, a 2010 NCAA champ, is one of college wrestling’s most aggressive and relentless competitors. Finch, one of Kevin Jackson’s first key recruits, begins a stretch with four straight matches against top-five opposition. === 133 POUNDS === WHO: Tony Ramos (Iowa) vs. Shayden Terukina (ISU) ABOUT RAMOS: Sophomore from Carol Stream, Ill. Ranked No. 2. ABOUT TERUKINA: Freshman from Kamehameha, Hawaii. Not ranked. THE SKINNY: Ramos won over Iowa fans last year with his wide-open style. Terukina operates with an exciting approach of his own. The true freshman is facing his third straight ranked opponent. === 141 POUNDS === WHO: Montell Marion (Iowa) vs. Luke Goettl (ISU) ABOUT MARION: Senior from Des Moines. Ranked No. 3. ABOUT GOETTI: Freshman from Clarkdale, Ariz. Not ranked. THE SKINNY: Marion, the only senior in the Iowa line-up, finally makes his dual debut in the series. He’ll take on Goettl, a four-time Arizona state champion, looking for his first win with the Cyclones. === 149 POUNDS === WHO: Dylan Carew or Jake Ballweg or Mark Ballweg vs. Joey Cozart (ISU ABOUT CAREW: Sophomore from Tiffin, Ia. Not ranked. ABOUT JAKE BALLWEG: Freshman from Waverly. Not ranked. ABOUT MARK BALLWEG: Junior from Waverly. Not ranked. ABOUT COZART: Freshman from Brandon, Fla. THE SKINNY: The Hawkeyes are sorting through their options at 149. Their probable line-up lists Dylan Carew, along with brothers Mark and Jake Ballweg as possible starters.
The Hawkeyes want to see Carew use more basics to go with his big-move capabilities.
Jake Ballweg, a three-time state champion, is trying to shake an early-season slump after dropping a pair of matches at the Iowa City Duals.
Mark Ballweg won a key match for the Hawkeyes last year at 141 in their dual victory against the Cyclones. He’s moving back up to 149, where he finished last year.
The Cyclones are trying to get Cozart, a prep Greco-Roman standout, to attack the legs more. === 157 POUNDS === WHO: Derek St. John (Iowa) vs. Michael Moreno (ISU) ABOUT ST. JOHN: Sophomore from Parnell, Ia. Ranked No. 2. ABOUT MORENO: Freshman from Urbandale. Not ranked. THE SKINNY: St. John uses his wiry build and long reach to score takedowns, generate leverage on top and ward off attacks. Moreno is skilled at getting to the legs of an opponent, but that’s only half the battle against St. John. === 165 POUNDS === WHO: Mike Evans (Iowa) vs. Andrew Sorenson (ISU) ABOUT EVANS: Freshman from Enola, Pa. Ranked No. 15. ABOUT SORENSON: Senior from Woden, Ia. Ranked No. 5. THE SKINNY: This could be one of the most compelling match-ups in the dual. Sorenson, Iowa State’s most experienced wrestler, is 9-0. The senior is skilled on his feet, but said he won’t be shy away from picking down against Evans, whose top-position talents have keyed his 9-0 start. === 174 POUNDS === WHO: Ethen Lofthouse (Iowa) vs. Chris Spangler (ISU) ABOUT LOFTHOUSE: Sophomore from Avon, Utah. Ranked No. 6. ABOUT SPANGLER: Junior from Naperville, Ill. Ranked No. 10. THE SKINNY: A knee injury cost Spangler mat time this fall and he’s still working into shape. He starts fast in matches, but he’ll need to hold up for seven minutes against Lofthouse. === 184 POUNDS === WHO: Jeremy Fahler (Iowa) or Vinnie Wagner (Iowa) vs. Boaz Beard (ISU) ABOUT FAHLER; Freshman from Deerfield, Ill. Not ranked. ABOUT WAGNER: Senior from Osage, Ia. Not ranked. ABOUT BEARD: Sophomore from Wichita, Kan. Ranked No. 15. THE SKINNY: Beard is off to a 4-1 start in his first season back with the Cyclones after taking a one-year sabbatical to play baseball. The Hawkeyes will counter with athletic freshman Jeremy Fahler or senior Vinnie Wagner, who is balancing wrestling with medical school. === 197 POUNDS === WHO: Grant Gambrall (Iowa) or Tomas Lira (Iowa) vs. Cole Shafer (ISU) ABOUT GAMBRALL: Junior from Iowa City. Ranked No. 2 at 184. ABOUT LIRA: Sophomore from Nichols, Ia. Not ranked. ABOUT SHAFER: Junior from Heber City, Utah. Not ranked. THE SKINNY: This is the only potential rematch from last year’s dual. Gambrall won a 12-3 major decision against Shafer when they were at 184. Gambrall is up a weight after missing mat time this fall while recovering from a concussion. Shafer is taking over for injured starter Kyven Gadson. === HEAVYWEIGHT === WHO: Bobby Telford (Iowa) vs. Matt Gibson (ISU) ABOUT TELFORD: Freshman from Hockessin, Del. Ranked No. 7. ABOUT GIBSON: Junior from Vallejo, Calif. Ranked No. 19. THE SKINNY: The dual could conclude with a showdown between tall, athletic heavyweights. Telford is 6-foot-4. Gibson is two inches taller. Neither seems content with a slow-paced, low-scoring bout. === "Contrary to what many skeptics had earlier believed, the Soviet economy is proof that … a socialist command economy can function and even thrive."

Re: DM Register's ISU/Iowa article and preview
McDonough wins at 125- 0-6. Ryak looked good on the feet but had nothing against McDonough on the mat. Went better than expected though, I was expecting a major or tech fall.

So basically ISU has 5 unranked freshmen playing the 5 lowest weights.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -
Re: DM Register's ISU/Iowa article and preview
Ramos gets the pin, Iowa up 0-9. Was on pace for a major but caught Terukina with a takedown striaght to his back.
It's too bad Terukina couldn't get a redshirt year, he is talented, just not ready.

Re: DM Register's ISU/Iowa article and preview
17-5 major decision for Marion. 0-13 Iowa.
Honestly this isn't going as badly as I was expecting so far. Hopefully we can get some wins after the intermission to make it more respectable.
Out lighter guys are getting good shots but not finishing combinations or getting re-shots and they are getting taken down on re-shots and counters. I know most of our coaches and Olympic guys are mid to upper weights, I wonder if that is starting to show.

Re: DM Register's ISU/Iowa article and preview
Mark Ballweg wins it in OT. Cozart wasn't awarded a takedown on the edge at the end of the third and that ended up being the decider. 0-16 Iowa.

Re: DM Register's ISU/Iowa article and preview
St. John pins Moreno. 0-22 Iowa.
-
Re: DM Register's ISU/Iowa article and preview
Sorenson wins it 4-3. Team score 3-22.
-
Re: DM Register's ISU/Iowa article and preview
Make that 21-3. Iowa lost a team point for shoving well after the whistle.
-
Re: DM Register's ISU/Iowa article and preview
Nice win for Spangler against Lofthouse, decision 8-5.
Puts the team score at 21-6.
-
Re: DM Register's ISU/Iowa article and preview
To win we need pins in two of three matches and a major decision in the third.
-
Re: DM Register's ISU/Iowa article and preview
