Nice move up for him.
Oh, and #3 at 160.....Iceman Davis. Really? Iceman? Somebody watched Top Gun one too many times.
Or watched it one too few times. If I'm going to name a kid after a Top Gun character, I'm naming my kid Goose.
Also, any others on the list we are currently recruiting?
I have noticed that Dakota Bauer has been left off the rankings again at 132.
He has a win over Gilman who is ranked 6th and Intermat had him ranked 14th a week ago. I would think he gets at least a top 20 ranking by TOM
InterMat Wrestling
Edit: Buf, you and I were clearly writing the same thing at the same time.
I think our recruiting is over for this year. Dakota Bauer is not ranked at 132, but having a very good year. Has beat Gilman, the highly ranked Iowa recruit from Nebraska and lost an OT battle to Iowa State recruit Larson.
Other Recruit Destin McCauley is at OTC training.
I imagine we will be after some walkons, but not sure who.
He is signed and haven't heard anything different.
The one I'm wondering about is last years heavyweight recruit Quean Smith. He should be here this January.
If he doesn't make it do you think we go and grab a scholied HW? I think we almost need to, or else we can put together a lot of money for a Brooks Black type wrestler the year after, but we would be seriously depleted for a 1-2 year span at that weight. Swope is as good as you can get for a walk on, but we need another high caliber guy as well.
I agree with you Brett. Unless they let Kyven bulk up to Hwt, thinking he might stay healthier.
If Quean doesn't show
165 - Caldwell (I hope), Molina
174 - Spangler (senior), England
184 - Weatherman, Shafer
197 - Beard, Doyle
Hwt - Gadsen, Swope
i'm wondering if Moreno isn't having trouble with the weight cut down to 157. if we don't get Caldwell he might be a good fit at 165, which kind of leaves us with a hole at 157.
Lots of question marks, with the middle weights. Cozart's performance and additude, Weatherman's neck injury, Moreno's performance and injury's.
Moreno just doesn't look that big at 157, but sure performed well at Midlands last year at 165.
Logan Molina is also looking good at 165 in open tourneys.
We do have Gabe Moreno and Destin McCauley to fill 149 and 157 eventually.
Seems like it really depends on the style of the wrestler. Reader was a very small framed 174 last year, but he used that strength and bully attitude to rip up his opponents. I think some extra bulk might be what Moreno needs. Doesn't seem like enough of a finesse wrestler when you watch him on the mat.
John Meeks moved to number 1 after Iowa recruit Nate Skonieczny lost in 2ot to Todd Preston at the Powerade tournament. Meeks beat Preston 2-0 0-1 2-1 in freestyle this summer at Fargo. Skonieczny moved to #2 as he still has the best overall resume at the weight with many quality wins. It's too bad John's team doesn't wrestle a schedule more like Southeast Polk or Iowa City West. Hopefully John will wrestle in the Iowa vs Dream team which will take place the day before the Olympic Trials at Iowa City West.
Jesse Doyle is wrestling in California at the Doc Buchanan this weekend. He should see some tough competition there with several ranked wrestlers from California.
Mike Moreno needs to go back up to 165 and properly strength train. Some guys are able to cut down and shrink there body and benefit from it and others suffer. Last season Colt Sponseller worked all summer to get down to 157 and it didn't work well, but bumped back up to 165 and got 4th.
If Brooks Black wrestles for a college in Iowa it will be the University of Iowa unless we hire Steve Mocco, but Mocco isn't a Kevin Jackson guy.
Dakota Bauer also has a loss to 17th ranked Skylar Wood this year 3-0. In a match that showed he really needs to work on his mat wrestling.
Yes I know Brooks Black won't wrestle for my team: Iowa State. Thanks for proving to me that you know nothing like normal by asking why would Mocco make a difference. Black wrestles at Blair Academy which is where Mocco wrestled. Mocco and Black are good friends as Mocco has been helping him develop. I personally think Black says on the east coast, but he has visited Iowa and they have former Blair Academy and Iowa State wrestler Kurt Backes on their staff.
It doesn't matter we won't be getting any kids who wrestle for Jeff Buxton anyway. He wasn't very happy with how Anthony Valles was treated by Kevin Jackson and crew.
