Would have gone to match points. Beard/England would have needed to be a combined +6 or more (assuming you take out the late NF3 Moreno gave up) instead of their actual -5.

Beard needs to start tearing phone books to build strength in his grip to finish takedowns and avoid easy escapes.

Beard had to have had at least 10 "almost" takedowns that didn't quite score today. If he could get those finished it would have been an easy win.

There are some good kids coming next year. But I would think that most of them will probably red shirt. I don't see things changing a whole lot next year.

How so? We lose Sorenson, but that's it. Finch, Goettl, England, Gibson, and Beard will all have a year of competing under their belts and at least three of them should AA next year, if not more. Spangler will be a beast if we don't lose him to that last concussion, and if we do Tanner Weatherman will be a very decent replacement. Dustin McCauley is coming in. We should have Gadsen back as well, and if not I expect Shafer to be improved after having an offseason to bulk up to the weight. Meeks might not redshirt at 133 and that will also be a big upgrade. The only weight I'm a little worried about next year is 157.

This is what our lineup will look like:

    125: Finch
    133: Meeks
    141: Goettl
    149: McCauley
    157: Moreno???
    165: Spanlger (possibly Caldwell)
174: England (Spangler if Caldwell is here)
    184: Beard
    197: Gadsen or Shafer
    HWT: Gibson

That's a very solid dual team and a good tourney team as well. Next year should be a very good year.

Jud, don't let the trolls get you worked up. Along with what you mentioned, if you look at the guys now, outside of Schafer, there definitely looks to be improvement. I'm not beating on Schafer, but it seems he either gets majored, t falled or wins by pin. All or nothing almost with him.

The individual matches are closer, some ot'ing, so it looks like they are learning. I know kj likes freestyle during the offseason, but I wonder if we need to lighten up a little and hit the conditioning harder. Trying to avoid the injuries, imo Getting more depth will help also, kids will have to work harder to earn their spot. I also see next year as a year where we improve, but think the dividends will come two from now.

I think we should give Trevor Volker a change at 197. He finally wrestled a tourney Saturday and got 2nd.

Here is the thing. I like John Meeks alot going forward, but he is not David Taylor. I don't think you put him right on the mat unless you are getting pressure from the admin to win now. He redshirts, and he could get a couple titles in his career easily. He doesn't, you are hurting his career and the future team with that lack of a development season. There are very few wrestlers ready to compete as freshman. Physically he looks to be ready, but he needs to get his technique in order to compete with the higher level guys at the NCAAs. Also, if Goettl stays at 141, you don't really need him. He looks to big to go to 133. I think that will be Bauer or Larson.

    Re: Missouri Dual Round 2

I got to agree with John Meeks. If Moreno, Gadsen, Weatherman/Cozart were performing like I had hoped and I thought we had a shot at a trophy next year in Des Moines, I'd say wrestle him. But it looks like we are a little farther away than that. With Moreno and Cozart not performing, Weatherman and Gadsen possibly being done due to injury, there are some holes I don't see getting filling next year.

    125 - Finch
133 - You have Cash, Hallman, Terukina, Jones (not ready to throw a true frosh like Meeks in yet)
    141 - Goettl, Jones
    149 - McCauley, Mayfield
    157 - Moreno, Swalla
165 - Maybe England or Spangler
174 - Spangler, England, Ta Weatherman
    184 - Beard, SHafer
    197 - Gadsen, Voelker
    Hwt - Gibson, Swope

Only seniors are Gibson, Spangler and Mayfield (Gibson probably hardest to replace)

Even if Meeks redshirts you still have a pretty good lineup. And whoever is at 133, Cash, Hallman, or Shayden, would be more competitive next year. Won't AA or anything, but giving up 3 instead of 4-6 is still an improvement.

We are definitely improving, but to the casual observer, losing like we did yesterday "looks bad".

Especially for a program that was consistently in the top 10 in the country.

I'm hoping a strong performance over the next 2 months helps!

I just know he has been up a class this year so far. He definitely has the frame to be a 125 pounder. I think Bauer will RS and eventually get the nod at 133. His performances so far this year lead me to believe he would be our best option there next year.

I would like to get some better depth at that weight. the best prosepct out of Iowa next year will probably be Sorenson from Denver at that exact weight. I think he will end up with the rest of that team at UNI though. I don't know what our future recruiting priorities will be. Hopefully we will have the depth and can attack high level performers for the next few classes.

    Re: Missouri Dual Round 2

I have been unable to get to a match, so I have a question to throw out to those who have. Is there any chance finch goes 33 next year. It is hard to judge off the tv if he is an easy 25 or a guy that is cutting strong to get there.

If he can 33, do we have a 25 (Larson maybe) to fill in and overall improve the lineup.
