Cornell Preview, Predictions, and Results
#4 Cornell comes to town on Sunday @1 PM Code: Weight Rank ISU Wrestler Record Rank Cornell Wrestler Record
125: #11 Ryak Finch 11-5 vs. #6 Frank Perrelli 24-1
133: Shayden Terukina 4-5 vs. Nick Pena 11-10
141: #14 Luke Goettl 9-8 vs. Mike Nevinger 21-9
149: Joey Cozart 5-8 vs. #19 Chris Villalonga 17-4
157: Mike Moreno 3-8 vs. #1 Kyle Dake 22-0
165: #4 Andrew Sorenson 21-1 vs. Marshall Peppelman 22-11
174: Mikey England 13-10 vs. Billy George 13-8
184: #16 Boaz Beard 7-2 vs. #3 Steve Bosak 23-3
197: Tyler Christenson 7-9 vs. #1 Cam Simaz 17-1
HWT: #14 Matt Gibson 15-7 vs. Maciej Jochym 13-11 Each team has five ranked wrestlers, but 125 and 184 are the only weights where both wrestlers are ranked. A look at each match: 125: Perrelli will be the favorite, but if Finch wants to be an All American this year he is going to have to win matches like this one. This should be the highlight match of the meet. Most likely Perrelli wins by decision, 0-3 Cornell. 133: Neither of these wrestlers will be going to NCAAs in March, so it should be a decent match just because they might be somewhat evenly matched. Still, I give Pena the edge. 0-6 Cornell. 141: Goettl has been on fire lately and I don't see that stopping on Sunday. Nevinger is decent, but I think that Goettl wins and has a shot at bonus points. 4-6 Cornell. 149: Joey Cozart gets a chance to return to the mat. Will we see the stud we recruited, or the head case that wrestled for us earlier this season? I give this to Cornell by decision but no result would surprise me. 4-9 Cornell. 157: Dake is a stud. Moreno has been better lately but nothing short of a lucky pin would give him a chance against Dake. Dake by pin. 4-15 Cornell. 165: We put our own stud out one match later at 165. Sorenson should be able to dominate this match. I give it to Sorenson by major. 8-15 Cornell. 174: This should be the tightest match of the meet. Two decent but unranked guys going at it. If we had Spangler back we'd score big points here, but I think that Mikey can gut out a win. 11-15 Cornell.
184: This match would be a great chance for Beard to stake a claim at being an All American, but Bosak will likely be too much. Bosak by major. 11-19 Cornell.
197: Ward would have a shot against Simaz, but Christenson will just be trying not to get pinned. 11-25 Cornell HWT: Gibson is putting together a great second half of the season and I see him closing out the meet on a high note with a major decision: 15-25 Cornell. What Iowa State would need to do to win this meet: Cornell has studs at a few weights that are sure to put up bonus points. Iowa State's best chance at a win would be to get the slight upsets at 125 and 133 and get the wins we should at 141, 165, 174, and HWT. That would give us a 21-19 win.
As for all home meets, there will be a Clone Zone stream if you want to watch at home. Here is a link to the live blog for the meet Here is a link to the meet on Trackwrestling You can also follow Cyclone Wrestling on Twitter for updates during the meet

Re: Cornell Preview, Predictions, and Results
I think we have a shot to win the 1st 4 and 165 & 174, and Hwt. But pretty sure we will give up 5-6 at 157 and 197 and 4 at 184. Only thing that could change big time is if they wrestle Dake at 165 against Sorenson. He has wrestled there recently.

Re: Cornell Preview, Predictions, and Results
I don't see them bumping up Dake at risking a loss to Sorenson. We bumped up Reader a few times last year as well, but never against an elite 184 pounder.
If they did that they go from likely splitting the two matches to taking a real risk of going 0-2. The only possible way I see Dake bumping up is if the meet starts at 184 or 197 and the win is in hand before the 157 match.

Re: Cornell Preview, Predictions, and Results
On a side note, I got the chance to work out at the Cornell wrestling facility a few years ago. That thing is a palace and puts our facilities to shame. We really need to invest in better wrestling facilities if we want to recruit well against other top tier schools, both for college and for bringing in Olympic guys.

Cornell's endowment is $5.28 billion, ours is $412 million.

Do we know Dake and Shaden will both wrestle?

Correct me if I am wrong but ISU wrestling is moving to a new facility that includes a weight training room right?
If this is the case does anyone know the details on the new place?

Re: Cornell Preview, Predictions, and Results
I believe that is rumored with that the wrestling team will get some of the old facilities when the football team moves to the new ones

Re: Cornell Preview, Predictions, and Results
The current football weight room could probably be converted to a wrestling room without too much expense. So it would make sense for wrestling to move into there. Add in taking over a lockerroom and offices and that would be a huge upgrade in wrestling facilities without a lot of investment required.
You could also then convert the current wrestling room into a space for the martial arts clubs and the wrestling club.

Re: Cornell Preview, Predictions, and Results
Just getting ready to leave for the 1 P.M. (not 2 P.M.) meet. Hope there's is still some magic left

Re: Cornell Preview, Predictions, and Results
I am really interested to see how Cozart responds to getting a second chance. I hope he learned from his injury/benching and has become the wrestler we were expecting.

Re: Cornell Preview, Predictions, and Results
I agree, I just want to see some offense, a win would be a bonus
-
Re: Cornell Preview, Predictions, and Results
Starting at 174. Mikey England is leading 5-0 at the end of the second period and has riding time.
-
Re: Cornell Preview, Predictions, and Results
England wins 6-1. Great match but he needs to get better at putting guys away rather than building a lead and sitting on it. Iowa State leads 3-0
