Would Varner make a good head coach?
Is he head coaching material somewhere?

Re: Would Varner make a good head coach?
He will someday, but not while he still has international dreams.

Re: Would Varner make a good head coach?
Yeah, he has at least one more Olympic cycle in him.

Re: Would Varner make a good head coach?
With his credentials. Yes. But, not right now.

Re: Would Varner make a good head coach?
He obviously has the wrestling skills, but does he have the personality for it?

Re: Would Varner make a good head coach?
Why not Varner now for Iowa State?

maybe because Varner is only 26 and easily has another Olympics run in him.
Who's to say Varner even wants to coach anywhere?

Re: Would Varner make a good head coach?
I also don't think a guy can step right into a head coaching position and know all the NCAA rules, administration, scholarship limits, etc. He has the name to attract great recruits, but there is alot he doesn't know about the other side of coaching.

Re: Would Varner make a good head coach?
My opinion. Varner was just passin' through. He had a goal, reached it. He's a PSU guy now. I couldn't find the article, but he goes on and on about why anybody would want to go somewhere else. I don't need to see him back.

Yet he still readily acknowledges Iowa State, and even showed up to the welcome home function in Des Moines.

Re: Would Varner make a good head coach?
I don't really expect him to come back - he's a Cael disciple and that means Penn State now. But if you go to his webpage it's all ISU stuff. He always mentions ISU in interviews and if you remember back to his senior season he declined to answer anything about his future until after the season was totally over even though everybody knew he'd be headed to Happy Valley. He's moved on, but he's shown over and over that he is still proud to be a Cyclone.

Re: Would Varner make a good head coach?
He is a Iowa State alum and is proud of that. He loves the Iowa State wrestling family. But to reach his goals, he felt he needed to be where Cael was. I saw him at the hotel where Iowa State fans stay in St Louis everyday. I saw him at Olympic Trials in Iowa City surrounded by Iowa State fans.

I was ****** for him. The 3 of the of the 5 athletes were from Iowa. Gabby and Jake are from different states. But they made a big deal of making Gabby and Honary Iowan. Jake got nothing. Pretty crappy if you ask me.

Being able to do something well is one thing, being able to translate that skill and knoweldge in a way other people can understand, and the ability to motivate and get the best out of people is a completely different skill.

As far as the honorary Iowan, NBC announcers made it painfully evident where he was training for his shot at the Olympics, and did the same regarding Gabby. He was honored for being a part of state while at ISU, but he chose to train elsewhere, so let PA make him an honorary Pennsylvanian.
