Sad to hear this. Very nice man.
I'm so sorry to hear this. I loved watching Iowa State wrestling in those days. There were some good match ups with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
Sad news, great Cyclone
Les was a very nice man. He was my advisor when I was at ISU.
Les was passed over by the then administration in favor of hiring Jim Gibbons.....don't know why he was not strongly considered for replacing Nick, but he was deeply hurt by this. I knew Les and saw him last at one of the last meets last yr and he looked in bad shape then.
What majorcyfan said about Les being passed over for Jim Gibbons is wrong.
Have several memories of Les. I'll share a couple.
The first is when I was working one of the Cyclone wrestling camps. I was working in a room with Chris Campbell and Chris posted a playboy centerfold on the wall as "motivation" for the young wrestlers. Les pretty much let him know it wasn't appropriate. Pretty funny at the time.
The second was when I took a weight training course at ISU. We used a system I believe was developed by Les. I used that same system with every wrestling team I coached. Was easy and worked incredibly well.
He will be missed just as Coach Nichols is missed.
Les was my PE instructor during one quarter of my freshman year. I don't recall the coursework. It might have been the first quarter PE class or volleyball. I do recall being lined up on the floor and everyone had to do sit ups. That had to be Les.
Very sorry to hear this. Les was my wrestling instructor in a class I took my freshman year (fall quarter, 1979). It was held right before the team came in for practice. I got to take on guys like Nate Carr. Les was great.
Great man! One I've always remembered as a Cyclone family member. Sorry to see he has passed.
