That being said, I wonder if he even understands that those are four completely different styles of wrestling amongst high school, college, and the two Olympic styles of freestyle and Greco-Roman. With four different styles you're not going to be able to have the same scoring system.

High School and College wrestling aren't different styles. Just slightly different rulesets. The difference between high school/college wrestling is about the same as the difference between high school/college football.

Re: Olympics drop wrestling
Wrestling would probably be the least likely sport I'd watch during the Olympics, Boxing is pretty close too.

Re: Olympics drop wrestling
Not a wrestling fan but I find this shocking. When I think of the Olympics, wrestling is among the first sports that come to mind.

Isuska is right. Shouldn't be cutting another original Olympic event. Really a bad, bad call by the Olympic Committee.

A fact that should shock no one is that the Modern Pentathlon's organization has a member on the board of the IOC that voted on this decision. This stinks badly of IOC corruption and FILA incompetence.

But at least they can re-apply with sports like wakeboarding. This is a joke. http://news.yahoo.com/ioc-drops-wres...6483--oly.html -

10 years ago I wouldn't believe that ISU would drop wrestling and now I'm not so sure. If the Big12 ever drops Wrestling (it was pretty close until WV joined), l can see ISU following. We are already at the low numbers for the number of sports we participate in. If wrestling no longer counts on that list it may be hard to keep it if we have another round of budget issues. I really doubt this happens. With the continued rise in popularity of MMA, and the solid foundation wrestling offers for that sport, I think college wrestling will be just fine.
Next vote is in September to determine the one Olympic sport out of the group that's been suggested (to which wrestling was just added) that they'll end up keeping. With enough pressure, they'll vote to keep wrestling.

For some reason I can't quote Linden, but...
I have one issue with that article. It traces wrestling back to the first modern Olympic games. Wrestling actually goes back to the ancient Olympic games.
Someone please tell me how modern pentathalon is more relevant than wrestling?
A windmill of Olympic proportions.

Re: Olympics drop wrestling
Wrestling was one of the reasons the Olympics got started in the first place in ancient times. What a bunch of boneheads making a decision like this. Next, they will drop the marathon probably.

Re: Olympics drop wrestling
If you essentially have a niche sport, it makes sense to me that they would group it with other niche sports, tradition or no.
Sports come and go, just like everything else. I wouldn't be surprised to see wrestling going away before long. That may or may not actually happen, but I wouldn't be completely surprised.

Re: Olympics drop wrestling
That's just a terrible decision, and it's inconsistent with their choices on other sports.
