Big News for Future Cyclone Eric Thompson

This message may be a bit delayed, but Eric Thompson, the blue-chip heavyweight, has been making news lately

Heavyweight title

In a battle of two top-ranked heavyweights, Eric Thompson of Waverly-Shell Rock won a 6-3 decision over Montini Catholic's Garrett Goebel.

Thompson, who will wrestle at Iowa State next season, scored a first-period takedown after a failed foot-sweep attempt by Goebel.

Goebel, who will play football at Ohio State next season, escaped and the two big men postured for the remainder of the first period. Goebel started in the down position to start the second, and he needed only eight seconds to escape.

Later in the period, Thompson secured a double-leg takedown and was able to ride out Goebel for the remainder of the second.

Thompson earned his third takedown in the third, and Goebel never seriously threatened. After the match ended, Thompson threw his arms in the air and received a standing ovation from the Waverly-Shell Rock fans.

Goebel entered the match ranked No. 1 by Intermat, while Thompson was ranked No. 1 by Amateur Wrestling News.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

It may not be big news around here, but where i come from, goebel was a budding legend. for him to be knocked off is huge.

In other eric thompson news, he has been selected to wrestle in the dapper dan, which is the most prolific high school all-star meet in the country. actually goebel was selected first, but he declined.

Thanks for the update. I was actually just about to ask who we were after from the WSR team this year, that team is stacked!

Through the fire and the flames we'll carry on.

You asked about WSR wrestlers. There currently are 3 Div.1 commits. Besides Eric, Mark Ballweg is going to EIU, and Dylan Wrage is going to Ohio U., coached by former WSR&UNI wrestler Joel Greenley.

That wrestling match took place up here in Minnesota. Wish I could have gone to those duals but I was working during some of them. WSR also won this dual tournament against some pretty good competition.

There should be some pretty good action in the wrestling room the next couple of years at HWT.

As a team WSR yeah there ok. They set a conference record in points at the conf. tourny. All 14 guys made the finals with 12 winning. I guess that might be impressive.

Cyclone fans in the Cedar Valley should try to get to Wartburg College this Saturday night for a peak at Eric Thompson.

Waverly Shell Rock battles Apple Valley, MN in a rematch that took place in the finals of the Clash in Rochester, MN. The Clash is considered the National Duals of High School Wrestling.

Levick Arena at the Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Wellness Center
Waverly, IA

Waverly Shell Rock v. Apple Valley 5:30 PM 2/2/08
Wartburg v. Augsburg 7:30 PM 2/2/08

Should be two competitive duals well worth the price of admission. ($5 for adults $3 for students)

IllinoisClone - thanks for the post. Are you surprised that Waverly-Shell Rock beat both Montini and Glenbard North in The Clash. I live adjacent to Glenbard North (our local high school is Glenbard West). To read the local papers here you would beleive that Montini and Glenbard West are top-notch programs. That either means that Waverly has an outstanding team or that Chicago Suburban teams are not as strong as Iowa teams.

I believe WSR is ranked in the top 10 nationally. They are stacked. It should be a good race between them and ICW for the title.

how about gilbertville don bosco for being stacked. check out these rankings:
The Predicament.com-your ultimate Iowa wrestling source

i think it was 2 years ago that about 10 of their starters were suspended for drinking and the backups on the team were still good enough for them to be ranked #1 as a team in iowa. what the hell is in the water over there?

Don Bosco is pretty good for their size as well. Iowa had a good showing up at The Clash. WSR got first, Ballard got 6th and DB got 8th. Independence was there too, but this tourny was a little out of their league and they got 26th.

If he can beatdowna OSU FB recruit, then can we get him to play on the O line too? :)

Cyclone
Iowa State became the Cyclones after they leveled Northwestern in 1895. As the Chicago Tribune (9/29/1895) noted:
'Struck by a Cyclone
It Comes from Iowa and Devastates Evanston Town'

Re: Big News for Future Cyclone Eric Thompson

WSR and Wartburg are at the tops of their respective levels. If Cyclone wrestling fans do plan on coming, I'd plan on coming early, from what I've heard there are going to be some seating problems. As all the schools involved are big into wrestling. Most recent rankings are 1 & 2 for Waverly and Augsburg.
