Another Awesome Recruit for ISU wrestling

Chris Spangler of Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Ill., will wrestle at Iowa State beginning next season, according to his father Mark Spangler.

Spangler is 37-0 at 171 pounds and is ranked No. 3 nationally at his weight by Amateur Wrestling News. He has beaten two wrestlers who were ranked No. 1 nationally this season — Brian Roddy of St. Edwards High School in Ohio and Grant Gambrall of Iowa City West. Spangler won a Class 2-A state championship at 103 in 2006 and was fifth at 119 last season.

he is a bit of a controversial character in illinois, because he jumped from 119 to 171 in one season, and obviously some people are making some accusations. however, chris has a superb work ethic, and it shows on the mat. no one is sure, except for chris, how he made the jump, but he is a good kid and a quality wrestler, and i am sure it was all natural, or all legal if you want to go that far.

Wow, that is a lot of growth in one year. I hope he is a good one for us. He is in my backyard here.

He's in High School. He'll have growth spurts. Maybe he was cutting 20 lbs or so to get to 119 and didn't cut much to get to 171.

At the cyclone luncheon Cael said that a big recruit would be at the meet this
Friday night. The recruit was a light weight and he said he would be our top recruit if we could land him. He wants a large crowd Friday night.

I think Nick Fanthorpe is from Naperville, I wonder if he is from the same high school and maybe that helped with the recruiting.

fanthorpe's school and spangler's school were somewhat in-town rivals. im not sure, but i dont think that the two ever wrestled, but it wouldnt surprise me if they did.

Re: Another Awesome Recruit for ISU wrestling

Since I went to Naperville North, I can tell you that the two schools are going to become great rivals here pretty soon. North has a very rich tradition in wrestling and Neuqua is getting up there, so I am sure we have a special one in Chris Spangler.

I got to meet Nick Fanthorpe's family on Friday night (very nice people, by the way) and I asked his dad if they wrestled and I think he said when they were younger but not in high school.

I was wondering that too...perhaps he was really pushing it to keep at 119 that year.

I have seen a lot of people jump up 50 pounds in one year, but it usually involved beer and Hardees.

Did anyone find out who was the recruit that came to the ISU-Oregon State dual?
