As long as ADJP is in charge at ISU, we don't have to live in fear of anything like that ever happening...

I doubt we'd see any 'Well, I know we won and all, but I'd much rather see us finish 5th with more 'class'.'
Huh? So you dismiss any criticism of Ithe Brands style of wrestling as humor? Or is this the "love the hate" mentality of your fans? In either case, very immature I must say. I'll take second place or fifth to Iowa anyday as long as we can produce wrestlers who understand the loss of their "grandmother" (the week before) is worse than losing a frickin wrestling match (which Iowa wrestler was it now that made that statement after he was defeated?) Tah Tah Jon.

Not sure I am up to speed on the grandma thing. Who said that?

Back to wrestling...

Cael himself said on my program this week that he wants to go to a more attacking style. He said that he didn't recruit all of the kids that are in the program, and I asked him if he thought he could change that mentality by next year. He said he feels that he can.

Is there some swagger in the Iowa wrestling room, that comes from the top down, and sometimes looks bullyish to others? No doubt.

But again, we are talking about wrestling. This ain't the chess club. No one is jumping off of a top turnbuckle here. It might be the most testosterone filled sport that exists. And to wrestle with the attacking mentality, you are going to see some outbursts of testosterone.

Some folks don't care for it. Those are usually the folks that are looking up in the standings.

No one had a problem with the Hawks when they were not a factor over the last four or five years. Now that they are back, wrestling the Gable way, that has changed, too.

And if Cael is to be believed, and I certainly believe him, ISU will bring that attacking mentality to the mat very soon...and that means recruiting kids that want to wrestle that way...and those kids are wired a bit differently.

Attack style, turnbuckles, Gable way . . . whatever. Teach these men (I refuse to make excuses for this age group by calling them "kids" . . a lot of "kids" are dying in the middle east fighting for our country) . . teach sportsmanship and demand it . . whether standing on top the pile, turnbuckle, or underneath. Demand coaches reel in their little testosterone rants and have some respect for the sport and competition.

I don't think they can start a dynasty like the one they had before. Like basketball there is not a lot separating the top teams anymore. With ISU retruning everyone next year, look for them to put an end to a hawk dynasty.

ISU doesn't return everyone. They lose two seniors from their 10-man 'starting lineup'.

They will have a very good team coming back. It's Iowa and Iowa State's world the next two years, IMO. Iowa returns 80+ AA points, which would have been enough to win the team title this year. ISU will do better next year than they did this year.

Jon, what do you think about what Cael said about the AA "monkey" that some of the guys had this year? I'm not sure what to think about that. Do you think that getting that is more of a hurdle than getting to nationals in the first place?

Through the fire and the flames we'll carry on.

I am not going to second guess him, I know that. Cael might be the best college wrestler of all time, so I will go with what he says :)

6 of them were at nationals last year, right? 7 AA's this year, including the 6 that now have two years of Nationals experience. Makes sense. They know what to expect, they know what it takes to stay in the hunt long enough to get AA status.

As Cael said, ISU might have scored the fewest amount of points possible when you have 7 AA's, so they want to do much better. Will need to get on the offense next year to score bonus points, too...something this year's team did not do a very good job of.

I agree with everything here. I guess my question should have been rephrased though. Do you think that getting that AA status is a bigger hurdle in order to go deeper in the tourney than making the tourney is to getting to the AA status?

I guess in just looking at life, once you have experience at something, you know better how to deal with it the next time you face that challenge...be it diet, mental approach, etc. Plus, if Cael says so, I am in ;)
