David Bertolino, Sr. Iowa State
Another feel-good story from the Big 12 is Iowa State’s David Bertolino. After battling for the starting job at 174 pounds for much of his career and never getting the chance to compete at the NCAA tournament. Bertolino moved up two weights, qualified and found his way into the quarterfinals. Unseeded, Bertolino knocked off #3 seed Mike Tamillow of Northwestern in the second round, lost by a point to #6 Dallas Herbst of Wisconsin and got a late escape to edge UNC Greensboro’s Daren Burns to earn All-American honors.
