Re: Banach is in trouble!

I actually met Ed a few times... I believe he lives, or lived in Ames back around 2000. He was a really nice guy. Didn't he also win a Gold Medal?

Ed is currently working in the ISU Athletic Dept. I believe he's like 2nd in command in the Compliance office. Also think that his son, a student at Ames High, competed in this year's state wrestling tournament at 215 or 285

Ed's a good guy. He came to almost every Cyclone outing we had.

Yes he does have a gold medal from the 1984 Olympics.

Ed is a great guy. I worked for him when he was at student-athlete services.

Once in awhile football players would joke with him and ask if he ever hit Hulk Hogan with a chair.

Riley finished 6th at 171 this year (as a junior). Finished the season 19-17. Three losses at state were to the 2nd, 3rd and 5th-place finishers.

Re: Banach is in trouble!

I was headed to an Iowa State - Iowa football game back in those days. I was riding shotgun in a car full of Hawkeye fans, but I had my Cyclone gear on. The traffic was two lanes and stopped as we were right next to Finkbine on the way to Melrose. Our windows were down, when a really big guy in the car next to me saw my ISU sweatshirt and started talking to me and saying how great the ISU wrestling program was. We weren't moving and chatted a little waiting for the traffic to get going. I thought he was a pretty nice guy for a Hawkeye.

I didn't recognize him until my buddy told me that was Ed Banach. I knew the name, just not the face. Anyway, I believe he had recently won an Olympic medal if I'm not mistaken. Months later I discover that he joined the Iowa State staff, which explained why he was kinder to ISU than the typical Hawkeye.

Back in '91, when I managed the Kwik Shop behind downtown Ames, Ed used to stop by and have a fresh cookie and shoot the crap with me.

He is extremely gregarious and fun to b.s. with. And he has a serious weakness for chocolate chip cookies.

Walk On

Re: Banach is in trouble!

I was there in the front row right behind Gable. WE always noticed the seats behind the other team were always empty, so we walked right down like we belonged there and nobody kicked us out. WE ran right by Gable on to the mat. What an awesome night.

Re: Banach is in trouble!

As great as Ed Banach was, Mike Mann beat him 3 out of 4 times their senior year. Unfortunately the one loss in overtime was for the national title. When Banach won his gold medal, he was asked how difficult of a road it was. He responded something like not too bad because I didn't have to wrestle Mike Mann.

As great as the banachs were (Port Jervis) Ed NEVER beat gable on the mat. As incredible as it sounds it is true, neither could Chris Campbell. In fact, campbell is quoted as saying that he NEVER could take Gable down.... IB
