Banach is in trouble!
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dbKCswhNyg]YouTube - Banach vs. Osenbaugh[/ame]
Too young to have witnessed live, so I have youtube to thank to relive a great moment in Iowa State wrestling.

I remember that match but what year was it? Those Banach's were animals

Re: Banach is in trouble!
Arguably the loudest moment in the history of Hilton Coliseum occurs on Jan. 9, 1981, when a packed house jumps to its feet as Cyclone heavyweight Dave Osenbaugh pins Hawkeye national champion Lou Banach.

Re: Banach is in trouble!

Re: Banach is in trouble!
That might be the only time you ever see a crowd rush the floor after a wrestling meet.

Dude, thats the smallest heavyweight ever!

Re: Banach is in trouble!
I haven't liked many Hawkeyes in my lifetime but Ed and Lou Banach were two that I did like.

Re: Banach is in trouble!
Looking at that footage, Lou couldn't have been more than 205-210. I think he was at 190 the year before (1980) as a freshman. Had a helluva career for giving up so much weight -- this was when HWT was actually UNL and you had guys like the late Tab Thacker (400+) of NC State and Steve "Dr. Death" Williams (320ish) at Oklahoma.
(For you pop culture folks, Thacker played Finch in "Wildcats" and House in "Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol". Thacker passed away in Dec '07. Williams had a long career in the WWF/WWE.)
Ed Banach joined the ISU wrestling staff under Gibbons, and still works in the ISU AD.

Re: Banach is in trouble!
56 seconds in, is that a pep band in the back ground?

Re: Banach is in trouble!
Yes, it appears to be a pep band of similar size to the hoops pep band. Back then they got that entire section by the locker room entrance. The Barry Stevens/Missouri video from 1983 shows the same thing.

Re: Banach is in trouble!
I was there and it was the loudest sporting moment I've ever been a part of. I will always remember that pin.

I don't remember who we were wrestling, but were winning pretty handly. Gable and the Banach's were sitting about 10 rows behind us scouting our team for the upcoming meet. My dad and uncles told me who they were and about Gable's wrestling career and said I should go get their autograph. I mustered up the courage and headed up the steps and asked if I could have their autograph. Gable asked me if I was a Cyclone fan; to which I responded with a quick Yes! He said he'd sign my program on one condition; when ISU wrestled Iowa I had to cheer for Iowa. I looked at him for a second, then turned around and started walking back down the stairs. Both Banach's nearly fell out of their seats laughing so hard and Gable said "alright kid, come back here".
Got all three autographs on the wrestling program and told my dad and uncles what happened. They all laughed too. I just thought I ain't rootin' for the Hawks no matter who this guy is. That is an awesome story.....rep for you...
