This doesn't have as much to do with Title 9 as much as poor planning on ASU's part. They have to do a TON of upgrades in their facilities and are having a really hard time raising money.

Anybody find it interesting that the last two places Gene Smith has been had to make drastic budget cuts?

I hate that I am semi-defending Bruce, but he said that it was all Gene's fault that he had to cut sports. He basically said Gene was big on promises and ideas, bad with the money...

Wow... Classy. Favorite paragraph in the entire letter listed below...

As you look to the future, I am sure you have many questions. To that end, a meeting has been scheduled for 1:00 pm TODAY in room 35-41 at Wells Fargo Arena....

So let me get this straight... The A.D. put the letter in the mail on May 13th at 8am, then ask people to show up at a place at 1pm that same day if you have any questions. I doubt if anyone would get the letter till 5pm that night when they get back to their residence. The athletic director is totally trying to avoid any confrontation/beat down.

It might have been emailed out as well, but regardless it's rude and unprofessional.

I worked in Student-Athlete services when Smith was AD. It always seemed that he spent as much as he made.

Northern Iowa will be the next team to axe wrestling. New AD... I hope it doesn't happen, but I am afraid it will.

Anyone else glad that the football stadium renovation didn't happen under Smith's watch? We'd probably have a pile of debt we couldn't pay off and a half-renovated stadium.

Where is Jon Miller now?? This is exactly what I was saying a few weeks ago. With Iowa dominating those 20 years, interest in the sport declined. And when Iowa wasn't chest thumping it was Okie State and Minneeeesoota. Dan Gable has only recently been an ambassador for the sport. Too little, too late. This sport is on life support.

For all of the tradition of Arizona State, they finished 28th at the NCAA's this year, and drew very poorly at home for dual meets. When an AD sees that a sport does not have much fan interest, it makes it an easier sport to cut.

I agree totally that this sport is becoming more and more irrelevant with each passing year.

All you have to do is move out of the midwest (Iowa and Minnesota) and you will soon discover that it is not even remotely on the radar screen in most other parts of the country.

Heck, there are not even 100 DI wrestling programs...to compare, there are about 340 DI basketball programs.

However, I was surprised by ASU (a traditional power school in the sport) dropping their program. Not a good sign for the sport in general.

But I would not blame Gable and his success at Iowa for the demise of the sport.

Is that why Texas wrestling is exploding in high schools right now?

Also big in places like Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, California, New Jersey, and Utah. Wrestling seems to be limited to a couple of states when you look at college success (Minnesota, Iowa, Oklahoma usually), but HS it is a lot bigger then most people seem to think.
