Roosevelt wrestler beat #1 and Iowa recruit St.John
Roosevelt kid (forgot name) beats IC West's St. John 4-2 I believe at State. It was on the news, we need to pick the Roosevelt kid for more than one reason: a) apparently he is good -going to second state final, b) he seems kind of brash and mouthy (might put some fire under this team) c) knows the Iowa recruit and can beat him and will get under their skin and in their head-it works against everything Brands preaches d) it would intensify the rivalry

John Nicholson is from Roosevelt and he won the match 8-3.
Huge, though he still needs to win the title. I wonder if Cael will be at the meet tomorrow.

If I remember right, his brother is also at OD. That probably has a lot to do with it.

ODU is in Norfolk, VA. Nicholson's older brother James wrestles for them as well. Not a powerhouse team but they've had some solid individuals go to the NCAA tourney.
The school will be restarting their football program this fall (last team was in 1940) and used to be one of the top women's basketball programs.

Nicholson goes up against junior Mike Moreno tonight, who I'm sure is the son or nephew of former Cyclone great Mike Moreno. The two have split 4 matches this year so it should be a good one to watch. Young Moreno must be pretty darn good too.

Re: Roosevelt wrestler beat #1 and Iowa recruit St.John
After watching Moreno lose a tough match against Nicholson by 1, I'm really impressed. He's a lot stronger than last year with great lower body strength. If he continues to improve he should be dominant next year, and a good Cyclone prospect. Knight also looked real strong, and would suspect he's also high on our list.

They are father/son. There is also a younger brother/son - Gabe, who many believe will be the best of the 2. He just placed 4th as a Freshman at 130. Not unprecedented for a Freshman to place 4th, but pretty unusual at that high of a weight class.

His brother is at OD and is ranked #6 at 125.

I agree by Cyclone standards Mike Moreno might not be considered a great Cyclone wrestler, but just to wrestle for ISU you'd have to be considered to be a great wrestler imo. I think Mike achieved all-american status, but I can't remember for sure.

he was an AA as a sr finishing 7th and was 3rd in the Big 8 (wow, that seems like a long time ago). he was a very serviceable wrestler, starting off and on during his career.
