Any wrestling updates/predictions out there?

Varner will win the national title. (Brester won't be his finals opponent.)

Z has the best chance of all the heavyweights because he has the best motor and this tournament is intense. But I won't call it.

We'll have 6 All-Americans. One of last year's 6 won't repeat. Clark has the best shot to be a new All-American but Mueller should feel a fire burning under his heels. If he doesn't make All-American than he may get replaced next year by Dalton Jensen (or maybe better yet by moving Sanderson back to 149 and letting Carr in at 157).

ISU gets 1st (if Brent Metcalf no-shows). Otherwise, we get 2nd. Even if we don't win, I hope we get some good ISU-Iowa head-to-head matches (125, 133, 141, 165) and that the Cyclone kids come out the victors.

My feelings exactly, it seems as though we choke more in wrestling than any other sport when you look at our national credentials. Just once it would be nice to live up to or exceed our expectations but it won't happen.

Oh, you mean like 2 years ago when we put three in the finals including an unseeded Backes and a true freshman in Varner? We clearly exceeded expectations that season.

I honestly dont know what to think reading this site sometimes. We are ranked number three in the nation with two top ranked wrestlers. Yet we have people come on and whine about the wrestlers not measuring up or performing the way they would like. This is a one on one sport. Check the results after it is all said and done and see how many one seeds win. If it is more than 3 I will be surprised. How about just being proud of your team and their accomplishments in lieu of whining about results that werent up to your expectations. I hate to lose as much as the other guy but I also show pride in my team's results versus bellyaching about what could have been. End of Rant.
With that being said, I am hoping for Varner and Big Z to come through. If we do well in the wrestle backs we have a shot. We just cant afford to throw away any matches. The guys will wrestle their best. Applaud them for it!

You guys are obviously heavily vested in the wrestling program and I would bet have personal connections somehow to the wrestling team so I understand your defensive replies. I'm just making commentary from an "average" fan's perspective. I know our program is awesome and is always one of the best in the country but I, like most other casual fans, measure success in terms of our team's outcomes rather than paying close attention to every individual's results.

I feel pretty good about our chances. Quite a few Iowa wrestlers didn't wrestle up to their seedings at the Big 10 meet. 2 years ago so many of our same kids wrestled great at the nationals so we know they are capable. There should be several crucial matches with Iowa that we are capable of winning and I like our chances. Anybody know if there will be any way to watch the semi's and finals live?

Don't know the schedule exactly but quarterfinals and semis have been on ESPNU in year's past with the finals on ESPN.

You should feel good about your chances, but just because Iowa didn't wrestle up to their seeds at the Big Ten doesn't mean they won't at nationals. Just look at last year, Iowa had 2 guys in the finals at the Big Ten's with 1 champ and 3 in the finals at nationals with 2 champs.

Last year Iowa had to win the Big Ten's in the wrestle back rounds and at nationals they had the title locked up after the semi's on Friday and didn't need the wrestle back points. Just because they perform poorly one weekend doesn't mean they will come back with the same performance.

I predict that all ten guys will win the national title in their perspective weight and Iowa State will win the team title by the most in history.

I may have been a little harsh but when people complain about Duke or Iowa fans being pompous and arrogant I get the same feeling when people post the same thing about our wrestlers. Its a tough sport and if one thing goes wrong your day can turn to crap in a hurry. I would love nothing better than our guys to bring home a NC. But if they dont I wont be questioning Cael's ability or calling for his head like I have seen on here.
