After more conversations re: Cael...
After speaking with several devoted wrestling followers and people I would consider ‘insiders’ over the weekend and Monday morning, I am of the opinion that Cael Sanderson had to go to Penn State for Cael Sanderson.
I know that sounds fairly ambiguous, but let me flesh it out.
I don’t think there is any rift between Cael & Jamie Pollard, or Cael and President Geoffrey. Cael talked openely about his appreciate for Pollard offering him the head coaching job, and how Iowa State is lucky to have him. I think Cael meant it, as I just don’t think Cael is one of those guys that is into nice-speak.
That’s one of my favorite things about interviewing wrestling coaches; they don’t sugar coat much of anything, and while Cael is not as brash as some are, he is bottom line, and he is honest.
I no longer believe that it’s about the money; even if he does have mega incentives in his deal, I don’t think that was the driving force behind his decision.
Unfortunately for Iowa State fans, the very thing that led him to being one of your favorite sons might have also caused him to look beyond the city limits of Ames, and that is...... LINK TO BLOG 'Until things are brighter, I'm the man in black.' -

LOL, I love it:

He did it because he did, nice one. Who would've thought of that?

Cael and JP get along just fine.
We are in a financial bind which limits what can be done with the program. Some are due to the results of decisions made by JP. That didn't help things.

Ahem.
Nice work Jon. Though clearly this is Hawk homer, anti-Cyclone propaganda. "Homemade beer, after all, is like a democracy. Every so often, you’re gonna hate what comes out of it. But when it’s good, it’s the best." - woot.com -
Re: After more conversations re: Cael...
He was probably taking the high road where it is justified to lie, unlike the money statement that couldn't have been a lie because it was coming from Cael.
It must have been more that he was second fiddle in Iowa as a coach and wasn't liking that when he is second to none as a wrestler then.

CS's facebook blog sounds like the PR department for PSU; most supported Ath Dept. in the country, most yearly applicants, 8 NC wrestlers from the 4 hour area... . It appears that he bought thier "Bright Lights / Big City" talk hook, line, and sinker.

Very nice blog, Jon. I wish he would have stayed, but if that's the reason, then it actually makes more sense than some of the other theories thrown out.

This isn't anything personal. But honestly, I don't think you do your job well at all on these types of things. I don't think Keith Murphy, Andy Fales, et al, do either. I just think with the resources people had they could do better.
If it isn't wrong of Cael to expect "Pefection" why is it wrong for me to expect the same from our local media?
