Jim Gibbons wanted this job
How do you feel if you're Jim Gibbons?
You drive to Ames and tell Pollard you'll take the job if offered, and he refuses to talk to you about it.
I think it's still a good hire for ISU, but wow, I'd feel incredibly slighted if I were JG.

Re: Jim Gibbons wanted this job
Fred Hoiberg wanted the MBB job and was told not to bother.

Re: Jim Gibbons wanted this job
About like I feel whenever I get a rejection letter.

Re: Jim Gibbons wanted this job
Doesn't really make sense to go back with Gibbons. He had his shot to be a HC here.
In general, Pollard likes to do things his way. If you try to go about it your own way, you aren't going to gain any kind of advantage...

Re: Jim Gibbons wanted this job
He probably should not have quit back in the day if he wanted to be the ISU wrestling coach.

Re: Jim Gibbons wanted this job
It's absolutely true.
I'm not saying they should have hired him, but it's pretty hard to argue with him as a candidate. He was one of the best coaches ISU ever had and wanted to come back. Hell, he only lives 25 minutes away - this was a no-brainer.

He gave up his own time, sacrificing for the good of the program.
By all accounts he was pushed aside quite quickly by Pollard. That's disappointing. He deserves more respect than that.
However, ultimately we do agree. At the end of the day he was a big time long shot for the job. He walked away before and has been out of "the game" for a long, long time.

Re: Jim Gibbons wanted this job
Fred Hoiberg was interested the ISU basketball job and was told not to bother? I hadn't heard that but if true that would be sickening, so I find it a little hard to believe. However a very reliable source told me that JP fired one head coach with an e-mail, so maybe it is believable, and the Gibbons story might also be. I think the prez needs to keep a close eye on JP, but I will say I think he got the last two hires right (Rhoads and Jackson), even if they did have to lobby for the jobs themselves.

Re: Jim Gibbons wanted this job
Lots of insiders here, some who have claimed to "know who the next coach is" but were wrong and some who know who wanted the job after the next coach was hired, but dont attend ISU and are more closely tied with other athletic depts. Funny how that works....what to know Saturdays lottery #'s? Ask me Sunday.

Re: Jim Gibbons wanted this job
Why don't you just change the name of the thread to 'The Official Pollard Hater Thread.'
The guy makes a decision for what he believes is in the best interest of the program and the haters come out of the woodwork. Good job, guys! -
Re: Jim Gibbons wanted this job
I would bet most people that want a job drive a ways and don't get to talk with the manger without an appointment, even McDonalds. Especially old coaches that left. Is Pollard supposed to drop everything because an old coach drove 25 minutes to ask for his old job that he quit?

We'll see over time iof the last statement is right. People were praising the hires of Chizik and McDermott when they happened too and look at how they are talked about here. Many are glad to see Chizik gone and some would like to see McDermott gone as well. -

Instead, I rallied and gave him a shot. I gave him 3 years and supported him 100%. I am now beginning to see that his hire was a mistake....
I think the only reason why some fans initially were excited about McDermott was because UNI fans were so upset he was gone and thought they would be screwed without him...
