Bummer. Usually had pretty good pieces about the CIML wrestling teams, even if he was restricted in coverage by the higher-ups at the DMR.
Here is what I don't understand. The Register will keep two beat writers for Iowa and Iowa State, yet they have a sister paper in Iowa City (Iowa City Press-Citizen) which means they could effectively get rid of the Iowa beat writer.
When McCool was out sick -- during the Big 12 wrestling tournament I believe -- the Register's coverage sucked.
I say this is bad news for the ISU wrestling program. They won't get near the coverage as Iowa because of what I've pointed out above. The Register will get Iowa wrestling stories from the Iowa City Press-Citizen, but will have to get stories from other papers which do not have an ISU slant.
Why cann't the ISU and Iowa beat writers do the wrestling stories. I guess I dont understand the newspaper business, but I just dont understand how you can afford to have a writer around to write one story a day.
Then again, there aren't anywhere near as many dates in wrestling, so maybe that argument wouldn't work.
Gonna be a bit biased here - when it came to covering the Hawks, it used to be that there wasn't a paper in the state that came close to covering them the way the Register did. That has changed, as now it's the Gazette that runs circles around anything the Register puts out.
Again, I refer back to the Big 12 and Big 10 wrestling tournaments. McCool was sick and the Register didn't send anyone over to Lincoln, Neb. to cover the Big 12 tournament. The ISU coverage was sickening.
Conversely, Andy Hamilton from the I.C. Press-Citizen wrote for the P-C and the Register used his stories -- much better coverage for Iowa in the Register.
If the Gazette could find a way to expand its coverage area, the Gazette would kick the Register's butt in Central Iowa.
I am guessing they will use Andy Hamilton for wrestling coverage, he writes for the Press Citizen and has done freelance work for ESPN and others. He is very good.
He may be good, but he won't be covering any Iowa State wrestling. You can bank on that. I mean, will he be driving to Ames to cover key meets? Highly doubtful.
Therefore, I am anticipating coverage of Iowa State wrestling in the Register will not be good. Coverage of Iowa wrestling, however, will be.
Their website is much easier to navigate than the Register's - their sports blogs are all linked right on the front page; it's just a much better product overall.
He went a majority of the time. I would say close to 85 percent. The Register used Hamilton's write-ups for Iowa home meets.
Surely you are not impying Hamilton will cover Iowa State equally as Iowa FROM IOWA CITY. Usually the Big 12 and Big 10 Tournaments are on the same weekend. Any bets which tournament Hamilton covers all the time?
I realize he couldn't be everywhere, however, the Register had Hamilton's coverage of Iowa to fall back on so it wasn't like McCool was the lone ranger on this.
So you are right. IF Hamilton turns out to be the "wrestling" writer for the Register, it would be difficult to cover both programs. Hamilton's ties, however, are with Iowa -- not Iowa State.
Also, I guess I never had a problem with Hamilton's write-ups on Iowa wrestling, but it appears you do. I'm curious as to why you don't think much of Hamilton.
