No. 2 ISU Wrestlers Score Biggest-Ever Win over UNI
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The second-ranked Iowa State wrestling team scored its biggest-ever victory over Northern Iowa Saturday, beating the Panthers 42-0 in West Gym. ISU’s first shutout of UNI in 43 years came via bonus-point victories in seven of the 10 bouts. A boisterous contingent of visiting Cyclone fans urged the ISU squad on to its second dual victory of the 2009-10 campaign, to improve to 2-1. UNI drops to 3-6.
The dual victory was ISU’s first shutout of the Panthers since 1966 (35-0). ISU is 52-16 all-time against UNI.
“Having our guys winning in all 10 of the matches is important,” said ISU head coach Kevin Jackson. “To be where we want to be in March, we want the team to be wrestling like how we are training them.”

Wow!!! Is UNI down, or has Jackson pushed the guys into another gear?

The guys came out with more aggression than I've ever seen out of an ISU wrestling team. It was refreshing to see, after under Bobby and Cael our guys weren't the most aggressive wrestlers I've seen.

Long especially. Great to see that kind of attitude!

this is the attitude that has been missing for years at ISU.

Douglas and Sanderson preached defensive wrestling, and were pretty successful. Jackson comes from the Nichol lineage, and has a coaching style similar to Gable because of it.
Don't get me wrong, I was devastated when Cael left, but as soon as Jackson was named, I felt A LOT better. I honestly think he's a better coach (blessing in disguise).
Watch for us to really push hard for a National Championship THIS YEAR. Omaha may end being the place to be in March.

ISU is good but Uni is down
IOwa beat them 49-3
Would have been 52-0 if Erickson was healthy
If you have a problem - if no one else can help - and if you can find
them - maybe you can hire: The A-Team. -

Both. I watched Iowa destroy UNi.
That said...these guys are far more aggressive than they have been in years.
They remind me of how Jim Gibbons teams used to come out and take it
straight to ya.

I will say they did look good to day. It is obvious Ward is spending some time in the room with Varner. That guy might have the most unused tallent in the world. With BD and CS they took Good wrestlers and wrestled them, KJ will do a great job taking the less than blue chip kids and making competitors out of them. The future of the program is in good hands.

CyFan,
Ward stated in an interview that he was being pushed by two red shirt freshman in the wrestling room - Cole Shafer and Tyler Sorensen, not Varner. -

The last couple of posts point out the reason, too...Ward (amongst others). He dominated a match he was not expected to win against Iowa. Galick missed out on bonus points due to injury (what a gutsy win though) and we dropped at least one match we should have won in the lower weights.
We match up well with Iowa. The rest of the country is well behind.
