VARNER'S PIN LIFTS NO. 2 ISU AT NO. 6 MINNESOTA, 19-16
MINNEAPOLIS – The second-ranked Iowa State wrestling team put up the points early and went on to beat No. 6 Minnesota, 19-16. Bonus points, including a last-second victory by fall from NCAA 197-pound champion Jake Varner, were the difference as Iowa State won for the second straight time on the Gophers’ mat. The last time that ISU claimed back-to-back wins at Minnesota was in victories in the 1982 and 1985 seasons. The Cyclones won despite missing All-Americans Nick Gallick at 141 pounds and David Zabriskie at heavyweight in the match at the Sports Pavilion.
“Overall, the effort was there,” Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson said. “We’ve still got some areas we need to improve on. We’ve got some guys that need to get our tactical philosophy and once we’ve got that going we’re going to be fine.”

This was a good win but no means a great win. I believe that if we had our whole starting line up, this wouldn't of been as close as it was. However, Long is becoming a stud and Sorensen did very well. Just hopefully we can get everyone back when it counts so that we can make a run at the NT.

We lose a lot of guys next season so it's great to see Long, Sorenson, and Ward step up. That being said, what's the deal with Thompson? You'd think the #1 rated wrestler at his weight coming out of high school would perform better. He needs to get it figured out because we're going to have some major holes to fill next season and I didn't expect with him coming in we'd have a big drop off from Z.

Thompson wrestled pretty well at Midlands and lost to the #10 heavyweight in the country by two points. I think he held his own for the most part.

Long was an animal today. I am really excited about his future as a cyclone. Also, Sorenson was OH SO close having a pin of his own. It was a great meet for our wrestlers. Hopefully Farnthorp will get healthier as the season goes. We will need him..

Great win on the road. Sounds like the young guys showed some promise.
Did anybody watch the meet? Sounds like KJ was fired up and getting warnings. I love that. Previous teams missed that fire. Wrestling is almost all heart and desire, and it starts with the coach. Liking what I am seeing and hearing out of KJ so far. Let's get that title back in Ames!

Can anybody tell me if Harold Nichols was like that when he coached?
