Re: What is the state of Iowa State wrestling after this disappointing showing?
If Long doesn't go to 133, who else would wrestle it? I just don't see the pedigree of the other guys left at 133 or 125 to step up. It seems to me that if Finch is ready to go at 125, he will be there with Long at 133. If not, and long can keep down to 125, then we have more points to be made that way. With it looking like Clark will be buried in the wrestling room at Iowa, makes you wonder what he was thinking in transferring.

He could have redshirted this year at ISU, then wrestled at 125 next year with Long at 133 and Finch redshirting. After that, someone would have had to be the odd man out though.

Long needs to go to 133 and beat McD. If I were Long, I'd be very verbal about wanting to stay in the same class at McD.
He can and will beat him next year.

Long needs to go to 133?? I dont see that at all. Ryak Finch wrestled 119 this year in High SChool. His frame will not be suitable to wrestle 125 as a true freshman. Ive seen this kid wrestle and he is an amazing talent but he needs to do some bulking up. We are going to have holes next year... thats the bottom line. You need to go 6 or 7 strong where you can put together your best tournament team and run with it. If we have a few gaping holes so be it for a year. The 2012 tournament team is when we are going to start making a run at things again.

We'll be good next year, but have too many holes in the lineup to be talking about a national championship. KJ's got some great young talent coming in and will get this thing rolling in the following couple years.

Re: What is the state of Iowa State wrestling after this disappointing showing?
does eric thompson have 4 years elligibility left? I thought he was Z's presumed successor..?
i heard he had to transfer to a juco or something because of his grades... will that affect his # of years left?

He will be a redshirt sophomore when/if he comes back. 157 thru HWT baring any injuries or anything that we are currently not aware of should be pretty solid and likely set in stone. 125-149 is anyones guess. Do we get Gallick back?? If we do I like our lineup better, But we still have holes at 149 or 133 depending on where Weatherman and Long wrestle.

Re: What is the state of Iowa State wrestling after this disappointing showing?
We should set our goal of winning the Big XII next year and finish 2nd at the NCAA.
How we will do it . . I have no idea. I am a casual wrestling fan and I admit it.
I am very concerned this team lost the Big XII title .. but who isn't?
The NCAA has become a one horse show . . .and they will reload quickly.

The NCAA has become a one horse show . . .and they will reload quickly. So you expect us to finish higher next year after losing our two national champions, plus our starters at 133, 149 and 174? I think that is completely unrealistic. Yes, we will have Gallick back, but ISU's high finishes at the Big 12's and NCAA's lately have been more the exception than the rule.
Did you realize that Bobby Douglas never won a Big 12 championship in 14 years as head coach? He also had 5 finishes of 10th or worse at NCAA's in those 14 years. Yes, we should expect more under KJ, but it will take a few years to get there.

Re: What is the state of Iowa State wrestling after this disappointing showing?
We got 3rd place, its not that we underachieved, its just probably seems that way since Iowa dominated again. A few more wins early on would have been very nice and would have made a difference.
I love the way they are being coached and hope the extra year will really help them get used to KJ's style and maybe we can surprise next year.
Long looked wayyy stronger than McDonough last night. Just a few small things gave him the win.

Brands finished 8th his first year, and KJ doesn't have everything in place yet. Year 3 is going to be the make or break year, and year two is going to tell us a lot more.
That said, we had many wrestlers underachieve.

Re: What is the state of Iowa State wrestling after this disappointing showing?
Will we win next year? Probably not--Cornell returns 9 starters. As far as what needs to be done to get back on top, there are several things. First off we need to get a different kind of kid into this program. I've followed these guys their whole time at ISU and I love em like they are my own flesh and blood. But let's throw a little reality in here-- we're not winning NCAA titles with kids that spend 5 years in our program and walk away with 1AA or evev 0AA's. To make a serious run at the title we have to get 3 and 4 time AA's in here at MANY weights, not just a couple. This years SR's are a great bunch of kids and will all have great lives ahead of them, however we need fewer "he's just a great kid" and more "I'd hate to meet him in a dark ally" type of wrestlers. As far as coaching-- I would never even try and tell a coach who to pick for a staff. However as I look at whats been happeneing I think we need a WORLD CLASS little guy in our room. That is one big difference between us and Iowa. Their little guys are working on a daily basis with the Brands, former world champs and Olympians. In our room we have world class guys for our middle weights (Gallick, Bono, Paulsons) and our upper weights (Jackson). It's no coincidence that the Hawks always seem to pull out the close ones in those lower weights. Their guys are just working out with tougher people on a day to day basis. I'm sure Yero is a great coach and if Jackson wants him here then as far as I'm concerned he stays. However he is not an ex world champion or Olympic medlaist. We should look into getting someone like Cejudo in here to bring up the level of our little guys. Heck, give Cejudo Cole Sandersons old job of "team dietician" to get him here. And finally--it's time for me and all Cyclone wrestling fans to do a little looking in the mirror. I'd be lying if I said we are as loud as Hawk fans. Almost always, when one of their kids is in a tight match those fans can get the ref to make that stall call or give that questionable 2 for a TD. We as fans need to let those refs know that there is more that one team out there. We can do both--ride the ref and stay classy. We as fans owe it to the team to start taking it up a notch or two.

Re: What is the state of Iowa State wrestling after this disappointing showing?
LETS GET THE BEST RECRUITS WE CAN GET-IF THEY R ABLE TO OUT WRESTLE SOMEONE IN THEIR SLOT THAT HAS BEEN A STUD B4 AND IF THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK CAN BEAT THE OLDTIMER AT HIS RESPECTIVE WEIGHT,LET THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK WIN THE SEATING UNTIL THE OLDTIMER CAN WIN HIS SPOT BACK.
