The following is a press release courtesy of Iowa State athletics communications.

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team fought hard to sweep Omaha 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-15) Thursday night in the first match of the Iowa State Challenge in Hilton Coliseum. With their first victory of the season, the Cyclones improve their record to 1-2.

Turning Point of the match

Even though Iowa State won the first two sets 25-17 Omaha kept it close throughout the beginning of both sets. A score of 12-10 in the first set and 15-14 in the second proved that Omaha was playing to win.

Late in the seconds set Iowa State went on a 10-3 run. Playing well as a unit the Cyclones were able to dominate the final half of the second set and use that momentum to win the final set 25-15.

Taylor Goetz served up six unanswered points in the third set leaving Iowa State with a 21-11 lead. Iowa State used that momentum to come out on top.

Cyclone Match Ball Goes to…

Suzanne Horner. Horner led Iowa State with 36 of the team’s 42 assists. With 36 assists Horner marks the fourth highest 3-set tally for the Big 12 so far this season. With an average of 7.33 assister per set in Iowa State’s first two matches Horner used her talents to average 12 against Omaha.

With only one ace in their first two matches the Cyclones were able to leave tonight with six more. Horner was behind two of those aces helping the Cyclones even more on offense.
