WRESTLING: Cyclones lose to Iowa, 28-8

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State (4-1, 0-0 Big 12) fell to No. 1 Iowa (4-0 , 0-0 Big 10) by a score of 28-8. This year’s CyHawk dual featured four matchups that pitted ranked opponents against each other.

The Cyclones got off to a slow start, falling behind by a score of 15-0 before getting on the board at 165. No. 3Michael Moreno grabbed two takedowns en route to his 6-3 decision over fifth-ranked Nick Moore. Moreno is now 2-2 in his career against Moore.

The 174-pound match also featured a pair of top-6 wrestlers in Iowa State’s Tanner Weatherman (No. 6) and Iowa’s Mike Evans (No. 4). In the end, Evans came out on top, getting the decision, 7-3. Following the Weatherman-Evans showdown, No. 18 Lelund Weatherspoon dropped a 9-1 major decision to No. 9 Sammy Brooks.

No. 3 Kyven Gadson scored six team points for Iowa State with a pin at 5:31 over Kris Klapprodt of Iowa. The Waterloo, Iowa native, secured the pin working through a near-side cradle, marking the third time in five duals that Gadson has won by fall. The two-time All-American has now won 35 consecutive dual matches, dating back to the 2012-13 season

True-freshman Dante Rodriguez got his first start as a Cyclone tonight, falling to No. 6 Josh Dziewa, 9-2. Gabe Moreno lost to Brandon Sorensen in a close match at 149. A late takedown for Moreno tied the match at 6-6, but Sorensen got the escape to edge the Urbandale native, 7-6.

Luke Goettl and Michael Kelly fought back and forth in a high-action battle at 157. Goettl took Kelly to the mat right out of the gate, but Kelly tied it up at two with a reversal. The two exchanged takedowns, with Goettl adding a two-point near-fall in the third period. Kelly again reversed the action and tacked on a three-point near-fall, securing an 11-6 victory.

Iowa State will return to the mat Dec. 5-6 at the Cliff Kean Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada.
