Iowa State commitment Devin Lemke spent a lot of time with tight end coach Courtney Messingham over the weekend.
It was on his official visit that Lemke, who stands 6-foot-4, 220-pounds out of Iowa Falls (Alden), learned that he will start his Cyclone career at tight end, not on the defensive line.
“They just said that I am an athlete and that I can pick whatever position I wanted to. I decided that I think I’ll be better off at tight end,” Lemke said. “I just like to make plays. I have always liked that position better than defense.”
During his senior season, Lemke caught 10 passes for 199 yards and scored a team high four touchdowns. Defensively, Lemke recorded 53 tackles on the season.
Lemke is now into wrestling season, where he’s currently ranked third in the state (2A) at 215-pounds according to www.ThePredicament.com. Lemke said that he’s focused on achieving his goal of winning an individual state championship later this winter.
“I’m not in the greatest shape right now but I am getting there,” Lemke said.
Lemke is currently the second tight end in Iowa State’s 2011 class. He joins JUCO prospect Ernst Brun. Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln prospect Jamison Lalk is listed as a tight end according to Rivals.com, but he’s actually projected to be an offensive lineman at the next level.
Besides Lemke, David Irving, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound prospect out of San Jacinto, Calif. is the only known defensive end commitment in the class.
