This is the time of year when football recruiting gets nasty.

Sunday was a whirlwind for Iowa State’s 2012 football recruiting efforts.

— According to a report from the Scout.com website AStateNation.com, Blinn C.C. defensive end Ishmael Hayes and linebacker Eddie Porter have de-committed from Iowa State and made pledges to Arkansas State head coach Gus Malzahn. Scout.com’s recruiting database has already listed the pair as Arkansas State commitments.

— According to the Tampa Bay Times, St. Petersburg (Fla.) Gibbs cornerback Gary Simon will make his college decision on National Signing Day, when he’ll decide from a top three list of Iowa State, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Gibbs officially visited Iowa State last weekend. He took trips to Arkansas and Oklahoma this weekend

What this all means…

— I’m not 100 percent sure that Ishmael Hayes would have academically qualified or not at Iowa State.

— Porter however could have been in contention to start at middle linebacker next season for the Cyclones. Should the Scout.com report hold out to be true, this would be a significant loss for Iowa State’s 2012 class.

— You don’t have to be Kirk Herbstreit to come up with this sort of analysis: Anytime that Iowa State is in the same conversation with Oklahoma and Arkansas to land a recruit, that’s a very good thing. Gary Simon’s situation will make Signing Day interesting for the Cyclone Nation, that’s for sure.
