Yup. I wish the University would wake up and realize what a good athletics program could do for it.
I know I'm dense, but I'm not following... Fill me in?
Yup. I wish the University would wake up and realize what a good athletics program could do for it.
Uh, isn't that what the article is talking about? The University support category is the state funding. That's what we're trying to decrease.
University Support falling. There's a shocker. Not. Highest enrollment in years, but we'll keep lowering our support of sports. Nice job paying for your marketing, Iowa State.
Yeah, he did write that contract. Basically, he has said that to get the coaches that we want, he has to get creative. I have no doubt that if ISU had a bigger budget, those extension clauses wouldn't have been in there because ISU could have competed with KSU and whoever else was after GMac.
I guess I don't blame Pollard for going all out to sign the coach that he thought was the right guy. Problem is, he was wrong and GMac wasn't the right guy, so now we're screwed. IF for some reason GMac bolts back to UNI and ISU ends up looking for a coach, I would hope that Pollard would form a small committee to interview candidates:
Pollard
Heft
Gary Thompson
Jake Sullivan
Diante Garrett
Scott Christopherson
Back to the initial topic, great job by JP decreasing the state funding. I figured when the BOR came out with that stance, Pollard would already be two steps ahead of them with a plan. And it wouldn't have surprised me to see ISU completely self sufficient in 3 years no matter if the BOR came out and said something or not. I wonder with JWRSquawk will complain about when ISU is 100% self sufficient.
yeah, that's what I thought, as well, but some folks appear to see the decrease in University support as a bad thing, so I thought I might be missing something.
May be the highest enrollment, but state funding to the university has been chopped big time. This summer, they're going to see department and program cuts and lay offs. As much as Geoffrey appreciates the athletics dept, he has some tough choices to make and Pollard weaning the AD off of state funds at least lets him avoid cuts there. Maybe some of you don't get that this is a GOOD thing? It is.
UNI is going to be in trouble, though. If they don't find a new revenue stream, they are looking squarely at nonscholarship football.
Uh...I hope you forgot this.![]()
If you did, you had me going right up to those last two names...:notworthy:
I'm talking in terms of many other athletics departments getting money from the university they represent in the forms of scholarship money and things of the like.
Right, but that's not what the article/letter/chart is referencing.I'm talking in terms of many other athletics departments getting money from the university they represent in the forms of scholarship money and things of the like.
University support is money from the general fund, which is funded with tuition and also state funds. State funds make up only 40% of the general fund. So not all of the 1.6 million could be considered tax payer money
the incentives are usually given to those who have done a good job, except for the CEO's who still get million dollar bonus's when their company is going under. There isn't a coach in the country that doesn't have a ton of incentives in their contract. Not to mention every single pro athlete and most CEO's.

Dear Cyclone fans,
Over the past several days, many of you have read reports about the Board of Regents proposed policy to substantially reduce or eliminate state funding for college athletics at the University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa and Iowa State University. The purpose of this letter is to share several important facts related to this proposed policy change.
The proposal will actually have a minimal impact on our athletics program because we have already reduced our reliance on state funding significantly in the past five years. As you can see in the chart, we have reduced our state support from nearly 12% of the total budget ($3.4 million) in 2005 to 3.7% of the total budget ($1.6 million) in 2010. In addition, we plan to continue reducing our dependence on state funding further in the next several years.
Despite the significant reduction in state support for our athletics program the last five years, we have been able to increase our overall annual athletics funding during that same time period from $28 million to $42 million. We have also invested more than $50 million in new and renovated facilities and have significantly improved our overall academic and athletics competitiveness. These positive gains are a result of your continued support of our institution and athletics program.
On behalf of all 450 Iowa State University student-athletes, coaches and staff, we simply say thank you for your generosity.
Go Cyclones!
Sincerely,
Jamie Pollard
Director of Athletics

Why in the hell would it matter what Garrett and Christopherson thinks? DG is a senior and SC a junior, not like either of these guys will be hanging around for long that who we hire as coach is going to have any effect on them. Geez, you've had some really strange posts around here today! Also Jake Sullivan isn't even connected with the program right now so he's another one that doesn't make much sense. If you've read anything around here the past few years you'd know that the rumor is he and the current ISU coaching staff don't necessarily see eye to eye and the fact that he hasn't made much effort to change that perception himself to me doesn't give what he thinks much weight. I like Jake but I wouldn't consider him a very influential person with our basketball program right now.
Right, but that's not what the article/letter/chart is referencing.
But JP's statement uses the exact same numbers in the graph and he calls it "State Support", so I think it is fair to assume that any amount from tuition is already accounted for in Student Fees or elsewhere.
Either way, it is great that JP already has a plan in place to address what the legislature wants, and has already been working towards it for years.
