Perhaps this has been addressed elsewhere. How many Iowa State fans stop being Iowa State fans if or when NU and U of M enter the Big Pick Your Favorite Number conference? If the worst happens and we end up in a Mountain West type conference, how many bail rather than see us play Colorado State rather than the huskers?

Rumor has it, is if MU and NU go to the Big 10, then I have heard from a good source that ISU is going to close down....

Program revenues would drop if we went MWC. In football, Bowl hookups might mean only a 8-4 team would go bowling. In bball, three teams might go to NCAA. You may not drive to Utah to watch a game...

To answer my own question, I'll always be a Cyclone. The issues of reduced revenue, increased need of success to land a bowl game and NCAA BB tourney spot are legit concerns. But as I've said, cut me and I'll bleed red (cardinal) and gold.

honestly, i don't buy into too much of this expansion talk, however if we were somehow dropped from a major conference, i would say drop football, pour all of our money into our basketball program and make it as best as possible. I'll take some heat for saying that, but i just don't think i would follow an Iowa State football program if it were say in the MAC conference and played the toledo and ohio of the world. However, a basketball team can still thrive by itself. Schools like creighton, memphis, even in small conferences you can reach great national basketball success, not the case in football.

Would there be any money if you drop football?

I heard the state was going to turn it into a mega casino. Just think of all the revenue from gambling and cigarette tax.

yes there would be money, while football makes the most money for the University, it also costs the most, by far. Schools like Marquette, Villanova, and Georgetown, while in the big east don't have football programs. They survive.
