The average at last year's NBA Draft Combine was just a little bit higher than 11 reps, so I wouldn't say 14 is less than average strength.

Yep.

This isn't football where strength is everything. Plus there are a lot of guys with long arms that make it difficult to bench a lot. I bet Royce White's wingspan is 6'10

I take this to mean he's very strong, regardless of the technicalities. Strength and toughness was something that was COMPLETELY absent during the McD tenure. Those traits defined our past two tourney qualifiers, Wayne's 2004-2005 team and LE's teams (10 years ago!!). It would be great to see us rip away a loose ball, rebound in traffic or finish at the rim.

Man debbie downer!

Honestly I don't care if he bounced his rear end 3 feet off the bench, it shows that the guy is strong. Something we have not had in a long long long time is some muscle. It looks like that is changing. I am very happy to read this

+1

22, good work.

I think Durant's number was 0 coming out of college, which was a big deal at the time.

I heard Fred did 37, but Chris couldn't post it for fear of setting off a man love explosion of epic proportions.

It is unbelievable that these high level bball players are not stronger than that.

I can bench 185 about 30 times, and I only weigh 185 lbs..

I can see why post players would have low numbers, but guards should be able to bench 185 a dozen times pretty easy.

being that tall, and long has to be difficult, but when i read the title i expected more... 14 at 185 is crazy low... i know about 10 people at the YMCA in west des moines that are normal dudes that can do that sleeping. however none of us have 30 inch verticles, and are not 6'6".

also a lot of these college kids are still very young. that is another reason why Utahs football was better... a lot of 23-24 year olds...

Just curious, how old are these supposed men that can do this sleeping? We are talking about kids who are less than 22 or less years old. What could you do when you were that age?

Here are the numbers from last year's NBA combine, making Royce's 22 even more impressive:

NBA Draft Combine: Athleticism Test Results | NBADraft.net

Some notables:

Cole Aldrich- 10

Craig Brackens- 6

Trevor Booker/ Derrick Character - 22

Luke Harangody- 23 (this is the most impressive one to me).

23 was the highest total from last year's draft combine, with the average being 11.37. That makes Royce's total pretty damn impressive.
I noted in the list that Brackins has the biggest hands of this draft class.

If a bball player, especially a great shooter, gets 'too strong', it changes everything. Their shooting form dramatically changes, which isnt good. Bball workouts consist of high rep, low weight.

Keep in mind that in this sport, teams typically focus much more on conditioning than heavy lifting.

True. But they are much stronger than they used to be. Check out NBA games from 25 years ago. A bunch of bean-poles running around. Today's average D-1 college player is much more ripped than most NBA players used to be.

Impressive. But remember you are older and have a wingspan that is probably 6 inches shorter than his. And he is a bball player where bench press is not terrible important. It is nice to see that he is stronger than what we have had though

That is a good point. I 'try' to play bball a couple days a week as a cardio supplement to my workouts and my shot is always messed up b/c my muscles are tight and I have limited flexibility.

Oh definitely, but once a guy develops a good shooting stroke, lifting too much can really throw their shot out of whack.

I'm calling BS, 6'3" guys with 6'5" wingspans that are 185 can't bench 185-30 times. They can do lots of other things, but benching their body weight 30 times at once isn't one of them.
