disagree... He was born and raised in IOWA..(as in the State of Iowa). I think he will fit in better as far as a radio show goes in DM vs Omaha... I personally think he just covered Nebraska, never became a fan... which your not supossed to due as a media guy... and which is what Omaha is full of...Media Fans!!!

Yes he is from Minden Ia I think, let me tell you lots of Fuskers there!!

Iowans who cheer for Nebraska (and aren't from there or didn't go to NU) are the scum of the sports world. They are nothing but bandwagon fans who cheer for Nebraska because they were better than Iowa or Iowa State. There is no argument to this. They can say "but I'm close to Nebraska!". So what? Close to Nebraska is IN Iowa. I grew up 2 miles from the Minnesota border and I don't cheer for the Gophers.

I have little defense for this scenario really. But heres one. If you live closer to NU and grow up hearing about them and getting them on the radio when you can't get ISU or Iowa, I would be ok with it. I'm not sure that one of the Iowa schools isnt available anywhere in the State but if this could happen, I'd give the poor Iowan NU fan a pass. :)

I have no mercy for the utter bandwagoner. Most Hawk fans are at least Iowans. Hell, an Iowa fan at ISU has more legitimate ties to the team he cheers for than a Husker in Walnut.

As a boy growing up in SW Iowa in the very early days of cable TV and who's first memory of the Huskers was the 1983 team and have been a fan ever since, myself and probably most of my family TAKE GREAT OFFENSE to being called "scum of the sports world."

I never said you were a bad person. It's just sports. Lighten up. And yes, you are a bandwagon fan. You rooted for Nebraska because they were good, and you rooted for them against schools in your home state.

You've stuck with them through some bad years, and deserve credit for that but it doesn't change the fact that the one and only reason you're a Husker fan is because they were successful. If Nebraska was downtrodden and ISU/Iowa were traditional powerhouses back then, you'd be a Hawk or a Clone.

I agree with most of your arguments. But you must understand if you live in the omaha TV market, husker football is day in day out 70% of the material. It's easy to get brainwashed into it. I grew up in SW Iowa and grew to hate them because of this.

Yeah, I understand it's easy. I still don't think it's legitimate. I grew up 2 miles from Minnesota and would never, ever have cheered for a team from Minnesota over a team from Iowa.

Please don't tell me how and why I became a Husker fan, I take even bigger offense to that than being called "scum of the sports world".

Growing up in SW Iowa in the early 1980's, outside of the local radio station and the local newspaper, the only other media we had access to came from guess where, Omaha. Back in those days, Al Gore hadn't invented the internet yet.

I can identify with what they are saying. I've always said that you are your environment. I grew up in NW IA, but never cheered for Iowa or ISU until I became a student at ISU. My idol growing up was my big brother and he got me into watching Big 10 football. For whatever reason he always loved Michigan. So my first memories growing up were of watching Michigan v Ohio State. One of my first favorite players I watched on tv was Joey Galloway, and the rest is history and I've been a buckeyes fan ever since.

All of our family roots are in MN (my Dad was a Gopher) , so I like to see them do good as well. You probably aren't interested in the story of my fandom, but a little perspective is only fair. Just because that was your experience doesn't mean others are bandwagoners.

I see this the same way as you, I lived 30+ years in "Husker Country" and it didn't cloud my loyalty to ISU. BUT....I think a bigger deal than the state lived in is the fact that Lincoln/Omaha are essentially right on the Iowa border. If the UNL is was located out in the Nebraska panhandle there wouldn't be so many Husker fans in Western Iowa. I think thats what makes the situation different from Minny, Wisconsin, Illinois or Missouri. Its the same as Kansas City, located in Missouri but is a KU town because of its proximity to Lawrence.

I'm with ya on this one man. There was no market for ISU growing up where I was in NW IA....I had never even heard of ISU until I was like 12 or 13 and saw Freddy Hoiberg playing in the NCAA tournament one year. If its not in the local media growing up than you're not going to cheer for a team you aren't even aware of.

One other factor not considered is, my family didn't have cable growing up. Cable/satellite tv was a lot less prevalent back in the '80's than it is today. So we only got to see the really good teams play on abc/cbs and that most certainly for me was not ISU, and for the most part not Iowa.

In today's electronic age, it's much easier to follow whatever team you want to (my MP3 player doesn't have music, but yesterday's Unsportsmanlike Conduct from Omaha and sports radio shows from KC that I listen to at work).

Twenty-five years ago, it was all about location, location, location. I can honestly I say if I grew up in any other location other than SW Iowa and didn't have family living in Omaha and if my step dad didn't grow up in South Dakota a few miles from the Nebraska border and is a Husker fan, I probably wouldn't be the Husker fan that I am today.

where did the local stations come from in your area?

NBC was in Rochester, MN, ABC was in Austin, MN and CBS was in Mason City, but they all had Iowa viewers so they gave slight attention to Iowa. Iowa State didn't get much publicity unless we were good (basketball season). I really don't remember having the media tell me who to cheer for. The Gophers probably got the most publicity, with the Hawkeyes getting a close 2nd, and ISU a close 3rd. I rooted for the Hawks and Clones because I was from Iowa, and my mom and dad went to Iowa and ISU respectively. I guess it always made sense to me to cheer for the local teams, and when I lived in Iowa, Minnesota (at the collegiate level) was never the local team, even though I lived just as close to Minneapolis as I did Ames, and closer to Minneapolis than Iowa City.

So you're telling me that if Nebraska football blew when you were a kid, you'd still be a Husker fan? I really doubt that. I'm sorry you took so much offense to it, but the way you've exploded suggests to me that I'm probably right, and struck a nerve. No one likes to be accused of rooting for a team just because they win, but people who are comfortable in their fandom are much less likely to blow up. If you really cheered for Nebraska football for a reason other than the one I'm merely guessing, you'd just laugh at me for being some clueless idiot on the internet, rather than being so offended.

Hey, I might have "moral high ground", but I don't have any National Championships, so you have that going for your fanhood.

I would say if you TAKE GREAT OFFENSE to what somebody on a message board says about you, you have some growing up to do as well.
