Marion cops have had a reputation for being to Barney Fifish since before I moved to Iowa 12 years ago. No suprise that they haven't changed

I start commuting to work in CR on Monday. I can tell already I'm gonna hate that town.

FYI - All of the problem with Iowa's gameday and the excessive tickets they have been giving out this year is due to the Marion cops. The U of I brings in surrounding police departments to help with security and the Marion cops take it WAY to serious. Things like on-duty cops ticketing off-duty cops who aren't even drinking.

Yeah, this commute is gonna be awesome.
'

On a related note, the University Heights (inside Iowa City just west of Kinnick) police (cop?) is notorious for stopping people for anything over the speed limit, which is 25 on Melrose there. I would imagine that they get quite a hard-on during tailgate patrol / babysitting. I would be interested if anyone could comment to confirm or deny.

Actually, Des Moines and West Des Moines along 235 is where these are needed the most. 30 - 35 over the speed limit is becoming way too common. I don't have too much of a problem is someone wants to go 10 to 15 over because they aren't really posing a danger to me. It's the idiots that are weaving through traffic trying to go as fast as they can that is going to cause the accidents.

really? 90-95 MPH on 235 is becoming way too common? really?

Grew up in Marion...never personally had a problem with them until I did run a stop sign and he happened to be down the street.

My mom on the other hand has a good story but only one. If you follow the law and don't think your above it you will do fine in Marion...good people for the most part and a lot safer and better area's than most of CR.

Kcci did a story last week. Every vehicle going over limit is photographed. A desk police staff then reviews and issues as if they had actually pulled you over.

There is not set policy although the guy interviewed made it sound like 5-7 over would be ignored. I'm sure that will stand until the revenue drops and city/govt officials demand they meet a quoted because they have already budgeted and spent that revenue.

Just go the speed limit. Its not like you've got a 1 hour commute where 10mph would have any significance.

Second Set of Cameras on Northbound I-380 Going Up This Week | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa News, Sports, and Weather | Local News

Update that I hadn't seen yet - CR police plan to create the first "speed zone" in the country!!! A "speed zone" definitely ruffles my "big brother" feathers...

First automated speed zone in the country. You see those white lines on high ways. Those are speed zones as well that catch speeds in the same way, although you need something in the air to do it.

I don't see why this should ruffle your 'big brother' feathers. Would they also be ruffled if you robbed a jewelry store at night and the surveillance camera is all that convicted you?

I live in Hiawatha and work down town so I drive through this stuff both ways to work every day and I've yet to get a ticket, but I usually never drive more than 5 mph over the limit. It's not so bad.

You know, in your drive from Hiawatha to downtown, going 5 mph over the limit is only going to save you a little over a minute on the highway.

Privatized law enforcement, for profit! What's not to like?

Not really a fair comparison,

The security system at the Jewerly store is protection for private property being protected by private money.

Not to mention the potential for data mining and tracking of persons that this system offers... in large volumes

Except that the security camera at the jewelry store is not used to protect the private property. It is used to apprehend the criminal after the fact. Just like cameras would aprehend criminals after the fact.

Also, speed cameras couldn't be used to data mine and track persons. They could be used to data mine and track cars. Cars being used on publically funded roadways. If the government wanted to install cameras in your driveway, then I could see an invasion of privacy issue. Plus, I don't see how someone could consider a red light camera okay, but a speed zone set of 2 cameras does become big brother.

Less than 5 seems a little tight. I don't mind the red light cameras but I think the speed ones should be more for catching the excessive speeders (at least 10+ over the limit).

So who here is volunteering to drive through one progressively faster to see what the threshold is?

Hey, those cameras are expensive. These are Money machines.

Are those cameras manned out of NY also? Or are they local people?

"Hey, man, we need some more beer money for the police union. Send out a few more of those tickets that we have been saving from last month."

The Government doesn't make money from convicting a jewelry store thief after the fact.

Marion? Good? I guess, as long as you aren't talking about Linn-mar. :jimlad:

It is funny though, how bad I used to think some of the bad parts of Cedar Rapids were, like across first ave from Coe, but now that I've seen some of the bad parts of Tulsa I know differently. Pretty sure I drove by cops stopping a convenience store robbery the other day in a bad (but not nearly the worst) part of town.
