Attention ISU students

Great point. There are what, 1500 or 2000 student tickets sold? Hilton seats just over 14k. Who should be filling those other 12k seats? Hint: it isn't students.

Understand. However it is much easier for students to attend. They live across the street for God's sake. They don't have families to worry about paying for. They don't have mortgages yet. Tickets are relatively cheap, and probably already paid as part of season tickets. Don't have parking to worry about. This is their fellow students they should be supporting, good or bad. They are the ones that should have the most school spirit.

But yes, everyone should be picking up attendence.

Wait, I only graduated in 2007, are you saying that the crossword and suduku are no longer the only reasons people grab the Daily? I guess nobody had smartphones (or was allowed laptops in class) even just a few years ago, so we had to do something to pass the time.

I'm not a big crossword/sudoku fan, so I forget those are in there. I would consider them to be valid reasons to pick up a daily, though. If the daily staff were to create those puzzles, though, I'd have to rule them out as well.

Oh, but it is the students. I was a student once. I remember having ample time, with nothing like careers, children, and travel to worry about. I expect lower turnouts for mid-week games from the general fanbase, for other LIFE obligations can get in the way. Nobody will convince me that all the missing students were busy with their nose in the books last night. I suffered through a 12-18 season under Floyd, yet the students still showed up in great numbers.

Wake up, kids!!! McDermott is gone. Hilton can be great again, but we need the students! Do it now!!!!!!!!!
You remember having ample time the week before Thanksgiving Break? I doubt it.

Yes, 28,000 students live across the street. Luckily there's nothing going on this week, like multiple exams, papers due, group projects. I know of at least 15 people that normally attend games that just couldn't this week because things need to get done for class.

Anyways, attendance will go up. The retention rate on students coming to the games that follow should be good once they realize the games are fun to watch for the first time in five years. Last year we win that game 65-45. Now we win it 91-43.

Serious question, do most of the students even have a clue about the Mayors significance to ISU? I'm guessing had Hoiberg been here 5 years ago the student body would have responded more.

How about last week or the week before that? I am sure everyone was studying a week ago Friday night. I guess we have an excuse why no one will show up for Saturday's football game.

I'm a senior and I've bled cardinal and gold since I was in diapers, but I don't have any recollection of the Mayor. I remember Willoughby, Pratt, Cato, etc. but not the Mayor. Just know he's "The Mayor."

Please point out one game in the history of Hilton against a school no one has ever heard of that has been attended well. Guess what? You can't, because it hasn't happened.

People are full of **** when they say Hilton used to be filled every game. I remember going to those games as a younger kid and it wasn't. Conference games? Yeah. Non conference patsies? Nope.

I know that there are times when it's just unavoidable that you have to miss a game. It's understandable. But I can tell you that if we were ranked right now, the student section at Hilton would be nearly full for somewhat meaningful games like last night against Drake. Schoolwork or no schoolwork. Excuses are just that -- excuses.

I doubt it. We are told he was a great player, as evidenced by his jersey in the rafters, but I suspect that he's just another coach to most students. I mean no disrespect in that, but as a student who grew up in central Illinois (glad to have escaped) and didn't grow up in a family fixated on Cyclone Athletics, it's hard for me to have any emotional connection to CFH or appreciate/understand what he means to the program.

You're probably partially right. I don't know that Hilton has been filled for EVERY game in past seasons. But I can tell you that even for games against instate opponents (ex. Drake), I'm sure it would have been nearly full if we were to go back in time and revisit some of the glory years.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think this can be understated. As a kid I had a Hoiberg jersey, he was a hero of mine and I'm just 29. Funny how just a few years makes such a difference in peoples memories.

This means I was a either a terrible student or a die hard fan because I never let school get in between me and going to the basketball game. I always just found a way to make it work. I suppose not everyone cares about basketball as much as I do though. Then again, a little planning ahead goes a along way.

And by the way, I never remembered the week before T-Giving to be a busy week. I don't know, maybe that's just how my classes worked but usually by now I'm getting ready for finals and such.

Yeah, I'm 24 and two years out of college and I'd say I'm at the youngest end of the spectrum as far as remembering Fred's playing days.

Yeah, you'd think that the school would let you know when a game was going to be played with more than a week or so notice.

Oh wait, they do... :twitcy:

This is nothing new unfortunately. I've been disappointed in the student turnout even dating back to the Wayne Morgan years. Seems like unless the name is Iowa, Kansas, Texas, or some big game that is on ESPN Cyclone Alley rarely is packed to the top.

I hear student tickets were $125 this year too? Shame on ISU for that if its true as you can get corner balcony for $99 an I'm sure some students probably did that too. I think about 10 years ago I was able to get an all-sport pass for around $125 and that got you into every sport ISU has not just 1!

Agreed. There shouldn't be seats cheaper than the student section in any facility. The same problem exists in Jack Trice with hillside season tickets costing less than student section tickets.

I can't seem to find it online, but I know there was at least one season where the average attendance under Johnny Orr was essentially a sellout. Mid- to late-80s.

Cant agree with you more. KU's student season tix = 100 plus dollars. Normal season tix = 1300 dollars.

Let oldies pay!

I'm 25, but grew up in South Dakota. Though I was born in Iowa, and my Dad watched Cyclone basketball religiously when he lived here (Jeff Hornacek was his favorite player), I only ever knew the name of Fred Hoiberg casually. I knew he was "The Mayor", but never really understood his significance until I had been in school for a few years and learned the history.
