Sign of the times. Newspapers are becoming less and less relevant especially with the loss of the local touch. I haven't bought a Des Moines Register in several years and I used to read it all the time.

I've thought of dropping my local paper, but when I get time to read it it is relaxing for me.

Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

I'm not sure how to feel about this. Losing Keeler is a good thing, in that I don't have to read his poop anymore.

However, it may be a sign that the Register's sports page is turning completely into AP and USA Today copy/paste snippets.

I miss the days of the Big Peach

That is pretty much all that will be left of the register. It is going downhill fast.

Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

And this relates to sports journalism..............

Well . . since several of you insist on dragging this thread through YOUR political prism . . let me get a crayon out and make it simple for you all:

The liberal media machine is dying . . readers/viewers reject your schtick and your philosophy.

HENCE . . Sean Keeler and many others across Gannett's empire lose their jobs (sports writers as well as others). Just like GM or Chrysler . . companies market crap at high prices . . . .people quit buying your product . . HENCE people lose jobs. Good people lose jobs all the time.

Now is that too difficult for you to understand? It DOES relate to what happened to Keeler. Some of you may chose to call it politics . . I see it as business and a law of economics at work.

And if that doesn't work for you . . why didn't AIR AMERICA survive even with millions being pumped in by the hard left. Answer: People across America do not want to BUY your product.

Not deal with it.

Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

I'll make this brief because there's no need to ramble on and on like I have a loose screw and no tool box ---

There are conservative newspapers struggling as much or more as the Register.

That is all.

WAH, WAH, WAH, LIBERAL BIAS BLAH BLAH BLAH. Your one helluva broken record. Quit whining, you have plenty of places (which you outlined in your post above) where you can listen to your circle jerk where everyone thinks the same.

Me, I'll stick with the KC Star where I can read both liberal and conservatives columnists and take in both. I don't need to only read spoonfed crap designed for a bunch of lemmings who all think the same.

I especially laugh at how you think ratings = quality. Most programs with extremely high ratings appeal to the lowest common denominator, thats why crappy reality TV and boring, formulaic TV shows get the highest ratings and Top 40 radio is crap.

Classic. Everyone else's news source is crap, but not yours. I hear that quite frequently around here. If somebody doesn't watch or listen to somebody else's news that is automatically garbage.

Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

The World-Herald also owns the Ames Tribune, and it wouldn't be surprising if they just used it to cover Iowa State, and perhaps print conference articles or opinions from other newspapers on occasion.

As of just a few months ago, the Ames Tribune is now owned by Stephens Media, LLC out of Las Vegas. Newspapers « Stephens Media Interactive

Thanks. That is probably not good news for Cyclone fans who read the World Herald.

Never thought I would say this but perhaps it would be better for Cyclone fans if Gannett owned it instead. It always seemed a little weird or unfortunate that Ames was cut out of the metro area in this way, and that the Register has stronger business ties to the east. People in Iowa City, on the other hand, don't like what has happened to the Press-Citizen since it was purchased by Gannett. The CR Gazette is probably more popular there.

You know, after a mod comes in and says "don't talk politics in this thread", is it really that hard to not talk politics in this thread?

Not sad to see Keeler go. For his family's sake I hope he lands on his feet somewhere. But I won't mind not seeing his articles in the Register anymore.

The Star? Really? I see 10X the amount of hate for the Star in KC compared to what I saw for the Rag in DSM. They just had major staffing cuts a while back as well. Both newspapers seem to be heading towards the same fate.

Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

So who's job at the Rag now is it to **** all over ISU?

Why does it matter to you anyway? No doubt you'll be ******** and moaning that the next sports opinion columnist at the DMR doesn't fawn over ISU and talk about how we're the greatest ******* athletic department in college sports history after his or her very first column, if indeed they find someone to take Keeler's place.

I'm probably in the minority, Hell, I know I'm in the minority, but I will miss reading Keeler. I got a certain amount of grim satisfaction/bemusement/irritation of seeing how the posters here who equate being an opinion columnist with a mouthpiece for Iowa State athletics reacted to his columns that didn't kiss ISU's *****.

Best of luck to you Sean, I for one think you're talented and will miss your take in the DMR.

QFT.

I for one will miss reading Keeler stuff, and yeah I'm obviously in the minority on THIS board. Yeah he said some negative stuff about ISU (and Iowa), but no matter what he said, it was the TRUTH, and sometimes the truth hurts. The guy wrote great columns, and was an asset to the DM REG sports section, IMO. Without his columns, I personally will open the sports page a little less than I do right now.

Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

These employees were discharged from the DMR due to their positions being eliminated. A discharged is initiated by the employer, not the employee. A termination of employment is initiated by the employee.

Really? I had jobs that I was "terminated" and I didn't ask myself to leave. IB

Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

It's appalling that anyone would cheer this or have this news bring a smile to their face. Do you guys think that Keeler made big bucks? I feel bad that he is out of a job and now will probably have to relocate his family to some other part of the country.

On a side note, I didn't always like his articles but he was always honest and didn't suger coat the issues we have had with our teams and athletic department. If I was looking for one writer's column in the DMR every Sunday, it was his article.

Best of luck to him in his career search.

I echo these sentiments. Just don't get why there is so much Keeler hate here at CF? He writes thoughtful pieces with the information to back it up. The bigger loss maybe Dan Johnson. Dan was the women's basketball beat writer and I think Dan also covered local high school sports as well.

I hate hearing that anyone got laid off, but maybe Sean will be able to learn from this?

What exactly is the lesson?

If you have a Pulitzer to your credit, your job isn't safe?
If you've been there for 20+ years, your job isn't safe?
If you have health/medical issues, your job isn't safe?

I think what most people are trying to say here is:

If you talk negatively about my beloved Cyclones, your job shouldn't be safe.

Bingo. He was the ONLY person that covered women's hoops on a regular basis. I think he had been around since pre-Fennelly. He was also their Barnstormers and horse racing guy.

Get ready for the DMR's WBB "stories" to be nothing but copy/paste from school press releases/game recaps.
