ISU STARTING QUARTERBACK

In all hoensty, I'm very excited about Barnett. But I really do think we will have to wait to see him when he's a Junior. I think Steele will be named starter tonight, and I think he will have a solid year and will have the reins for two years.

I hope Steele truly is the real deal. I want ISU to be great! I'm not bashing him. I just think this limits QB development and recruiting when you're trying to build a program. I'm just not a fan of bringing JC QB's and putting them ahead of your recruits before they get a chance to truly prove or disprove themselves. Sometimes it works out, a la Auburn. But that was Gene Chizik (former ISU coach). Barnett has been great! I've been to the scrimmages...will be there today. I've seen the same videos you've seen. The only difference is he's not 6'3. He performs the same or better with the 1's and 2's as Jantz or Tiller.

okay i respect your opinion but disagree.. steele does the the quickest first 3 steps of the qbs. that doesnt equal starting, but as i have stated before... unless someone is hitting open guys and the right read over 60% of the time all the time..then steele has them beat already based on athletic ability alone.

Disagree on the Juco comments. The reason Steele Jantz was recruited is because of the perception by the coaching staff that Tiller might not be the answer at QB. And Barnett would just be a RS Freshman. I don't think this hurts our recruiting at all. It merely sends the message that at any position if the HS players that we are recruiting do NOT develop to the level we were hoping for that we would be willing to immediately upgrade the position by taking a Juco who could compete for a starting position.

IMO, that actually strengthens our hand in recruiting. Because players know that if they develop and become good and other players at other positions suck, that the coaching staff will bring in the necessary players to field a competitive decent team. Who wants to spend 3 years or so busting your *** and when other players suck the coaches won't bring in other players to make the team better?

I believe that the coaching staff has known since the day Jantz stepped on campus that he was the one they wanted taking the snaps. Rarely does a coaching staff tell the fan base whats really going on.

I think it will be Jantz but for the long term success of this program, it should be Barnett. Here's my reasoning. QB development. The 3 things CPR has listed since day 1 is accuracy, leadership, and ability to make plays with their feet. Now, when we look at the three QB's, all are very good at making plays with their feet. I believe Jantz and JB are probably even in leadership and ahead of Tiller because of some of his social media issues. At least nothing has been said about JB not being a leader. However, the statement has been made time and time again that JB is the most accurate of the three.
IMO, it's a no brainer. Now, if JB is competing with Jantz, our saviour, what's in store for SR or Rohach? What can they look forward to. What can potential recruits down the road look forward to....being overshadowed by some JC recruit simply because he is "thicker". Look at the perennial powers in this conference (Texas, OU, OUState), even TT, how often do they chase JC QB's instead of developing the guys they recruit. We will become just like KState. Every JC QB will be waiting on his call from ISU. Guys, we've recruited some very good QB's the last couple if years. Let's not lose sight that we're trying to get out the "left out" group. Building and not patching is what's gonna get us
there.
I'm going to root for Steele to do great things for ISU if he's the guy. And I'm hoping that JB will stay ready and that Sam and the 2012 class of QB's will stay on course with ISU. But IMO, if I had a RSfr that could stand toe to toe with a JC transfer on the field, I would go that route. Especially, with the fact that every media outlet is giving us less than 5 wins knowing Steele will be the guy, I'll take those lumps with my youngster and let him gain that experience. Plus, I'm showing my future QB recruits, I'm not ************ when I tell you that you will play here. JMO.

3rd. Win the fricking job. Quit stating other reasons why you should be quarterback. Play better and you will be the guy. End of story. I don't care who wins the job. I want the best player on the field and I KNOW Rhoads would not play an inferior player ( by his evaluation).

4th. Any smart coach plays to win NOW, not three years down the road. You know why? A lot of things can happen in three years to negatively affect your team and you may not be there then if you don't win now.

5th. Some of ISU's best players have been JC kids. Seneca Wallace was a JC quarterback. I don't think I would trade him for anyone. ISU can pick up kids who have talent but couldn't qualify for the Big 12 out of high school. KSU (your example) is very smart in that respect although they take too many.

More than likely Barnett will get a shot to play anyway with the likelihood of injuries etc. No one promises quarterbacks they will play at ISU and they shouldn't. You compete for playing time.

You missed one correction: What worthwhile coach would base his playing decisions on the media's projections of his possible wins? If our coach was saying, "Well, they've all picked us last, so I guess I should play a freshman and hope things work out in a year or two," I would say we had a pathetic spineless coach who didn't have the will to win.

That would probably be the nicest thing we saw written about a coach like that.

I'm not getting your recruiting issue here...if I was Richardson or Rohach I would be MUCH more concerned about CPR starting a RFS than I would a JC guy. Steele will be gone about the perfect time for SR to come take the job. ISU does not need to be starting Freshman QB's. We need to get to the point that a guy can come in and really do well for his jr/sr year. Starting a guy as a freshman to me just tells other guys/recruits that the qb job at ISU is sealed up for the next 3-4 years, not that that would be the case but perhaps the perception. That's certainly NOT a selling point to high school kids or guys redshirting this year.

In response to your counting;

1st - You're are absolutely right. That's one of my arguments with people on here saying that JB should not play simply because he's just a RsFr.

2nd - You're absolutely right. JC's are typically brought in for depth. My argument here has to do with the "earning" part. The very first depth chart listed this spring before spring ball started had SJ list #2, before any practices even started. Leads to the point RedBlooded made that the staff wanted him to be the guy and they put him in position to make that happen.

3rd - You're absolutely right. But isn't everyone on here stating reasons one way or the other for their guy.

4th - You're absolutely right. I'm hoping we'll win NOW. Nothing is guaranteed. We still have to play the games.

5th - You're absolutely right. And I knew you would go there with Seneca Wallace. But, that's why we're Iowa State.

However, I agree and disagree with the last statement. I agree that no kid should be promised to play at any position at any school not just ISU. If they are, they should steer clear of that program. But, I disagree that it's not happening.
