They wanted to keep Texas from joining another league.

If there are 4 Super conferences, the thought is that they could create their own networks, which cover a large area, and take money away from ESPN as they would no longer need ESPN for their main sources of distribution.

ESPN does not want 4 16 team super conferences.

This is 100% accurate.

ESPN's investment in the LHN was simply a way of trying to preserve their monopoly on the sport.

ESPN fears super conferences for two reasons: 1. Those conferences could create their own networks that could take power & money away from ESPN & 2. Fewer conferences means much higher TV contract costs - supply & demand more or less guarantees that.

The top dog conferences don't want 18 schools. They want 16. Not once has there been anything written about 18. If this thing goes down it's going to be a race to 16 between the SEC, PAC & BIG. Then the ACC will probably take what's left to get there. It's going to get ugly. The best thing for the Big 12 to survive and keep this from happening.

Apparently you haven't done much reading on the topic, because there has been a ton written on 18 or 20 team conferences. Maybe more that 16 in fact.

I have seen at least a handful of these stories. One from Fox, CBS, and some SEC blog.

You're giving the powers-that-be far too much credit in the integrity and honesty department. They would all sell their mother if it generated a few million bucks in new revenue. What else are the "vocally united nine" going to say? Be smarter than that, poncho.

Your opinion works - if you've 100% given up on the Big 12s survival. Instead I see 9 schools fighting for the viability of the conference.

Apparently you haven't done much reading on the topic, because there has been a ton written on 18 or 20 team conferences. Maybe more that 16 in fact.

I think trajan wants to see all of us left out. It's the only scenario he entertains, even though there's a lot to be shown as to why going beyond 16 makes sense, if you're going to go that far at all.

BYU and ND go into the mix of ACC(12 Teams), Big East(9 Teams) and Big 12(9 Teams) to create 32 teams, which will be split into 2 to make the first 2 super conferences...

But if that happens, there are still 5 conferences. And the SEC and Big Ten would want to poach from those conferences before considering MAC, Sunbelt and CUSA schools. The Pac 12, on the other hand, could get 4 legitimate football programs from non-BCS leagues if they drop the fantasy that academics mean something in all this (Nevada was very solid the past few years, BSU, AFA, Hawaii, Fresno State have all played at BCS level most seasons recently)

I don't care if super conferences exist or not, I only care about the idea where four conferences are in and everybody else is out. Specifically I don't like the idea of half the FBS teams being out. You're painting a five conference picture here which could only lead to an 8 or 16 team playoff with 3-11 at large spots. That's not scary to me because it's not really screwing anybody over like the rigid 4x16 model does.

If they don't have an answer from the SEC (or if the answer they have is not in their favor), I will have a good laugh at their expense. Going forward, though, that means we're stuck with aTm, which doesn't appear to be a good thing with their wandering eye...
