Both would be an unmitigated disaster.
ESPN and FOX need to settle with the leftovers before OU leaves and kills our deals. FOX/ESPN offering more money to OU to go PAC, conflicts with their deals with us. A settlement would be in their best interest, no one wants to get into litigation.
To me, the most important part of the 2nd tier deal with FOX was the exposure. The $1B 2nd tier deal effectively showed every ISU football game and lots of men's and women's basketball too.
This settlement would have to give an equivalent level of exposure. The games would be on free channels similar to BIG, shown in IA, CHI, KC, MN and the opposing teams region too. Maybe this is done through a new deal with our new conference.
Where did you get that from?
Assuming only a doornail is deader than the Big 12, Texas is left with four options, with a desire for Pac-12 membership remaining at the top of the wish list. The other three are becoming an independent, knocking on the Big Ten's door, or convincing Oklahoma to stay and seek a blockbuster Big 12 merger with the ACC or Big East, for the country's first super-conference.
• Tim Brando said this morning he believes the Pac 12 will take Texas Tech whether Texas comes along or not. This news would be met joyously in Lubbock.
• Does Texas Tech have power? I heard from Tech folks last night who were furious that Texas was blocking it from going to the Pac 12. They believe Texas will prop up the Big 12 by adding BYU, Air Force and Houston to keep its TV network going. Tech fans don’t like this alternative because there’s great risk. If the Big 12 collapses, the worst thing that can happen to Texas is to go independent. Texas Tech could be left without attractive (read BCS options) if the Pac 12 slots are taken by then.
One source familiar with the goings on from last summer told me a few weeks ago that KU actually was in good shape with the Pac-12 last summer and, had things fallen apart then, would've been more than welcomed to join OU, Texas and the rest of the defectors out west.
If the Big 12 implodes, based on Texas A&M’s anticipated move to the SEC and the possible advent of a Pac-16, there has been speculation about the Big East seeking to bring in the five remaining Big 12 schools (Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri and Iowa State) as part of an expanded football league in 2012. TCU will join the Big East next season.
A source close to the Big 12 told The Kansas City Star, that the conference could survive multiple losses. The remaining schools - even if it was down to Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Baylor - could form the core of a conference that would add expansion targets. "Absolutely" that is a possibility that has been discussed by the Big 12, the source said.
The school credited with saving the conference last season let others publicly set the agenda. From Oklahoma State to Missouri to Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott at Cowboys Stadium, they were more than willing to oblige as all signs started pointing west. Still, the final fate of the Big 12 may lie with Texas, president William Powers and athletic director DeLoss Dodds, a high-ranking Big 12 school source said Saturday night.
"It's all up to DeLoss," the source said.
Legislative leaders have been closely monitoring the situation, and some have been talking to Texas officials about their concerns over what might happen if the four schools Longhorns and Texas Tech bolt the Big 12, along with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.
Some lawmakers said Boren's comments caught their attention and sparked worries that the Big 12 may be in serious trouble.
"A number of legislators don't think it would be in the best interest of Texas to have no major conference in the Southwest," said one lawmaker, who asked to remain anonymous.
"There is a growing sentiment that Texas schools leaving for the Pac-12 doesn't seem to be a good idea right now."
"Lt. Gov. Dewhurst's primary focus is to ensure the best possible outcome for all Texas universities," Mike Walz, a spokesman for Dewhurst, said Sunday.
But a source in the Senate emphasized legislative leaders right now are not trying to tell UT or Texas Tech what to do other than to make sure whatever they do "is in the best interests" of their universities and students.
"This could be one crazy week," a Big 12 school source said Sunday.
It'd be pretty funny if the Forgotten Five were enough to keep the conference bylaws in place, keep a bunch of forfeited revenue, keep the current television contracts (although it appears those can be voided), keep AQ status, and invite a bunch of mid-majors to join.
How many schools needed to keep AQ? Wouldn't it be awesome to be in a league of 5, with winner to BCS? Missouri would go to the NC every year.
I'd rather take teams from the BE than a mid-major.It'd be pretty funny if the Forgotten Five were enough to keep the conference bylaws in place, keep a bunch of forfeited revenue, keep the current television contracts (although it appears those can be voided), keep AQ status, and invite a bunch of mid-majors to join.

Ha! Texas Tech to the Pac 12 without Texas? I'll believe that when I see it Tim Brando.

I've seen too much smoke out there about KU possible replacing OSU or Tech for the PAC in the past not to believe that KU isn't going to land on its feet somewhere.

This Fort Worth Paper isn't afraid to mention all 5 leftovers going to the Big East as speculation. If I'm the Big East, why stop at 12? You're going to lose at least 1 team in the near future (either WV directly, or another school who the ACC will take after losing 1 to the SEC). The odds are the Big East will lose multiples at some point.

I totally agree with this statement. No way OU forces Texas' hand. Texas will do what it wants. If Texas ends up in the Pac16 and folds the Horn network as we know it, it's because that's what they chose to do.

Boise to PAC as #16 and ACC school to SEC as #14 would be the best situation to keep the forgotten five and Texas together there.I would not be shocked if Texas and the forgotten five stuck together at this point and started adding Some other schools. I think it is very unlikely because you would have the PAC 16 #16 team and SEC #14 team still hanging out there, but at this point nothing would shock me.

That would suck. A lot.
