Monday Musings: Realignment Edition

Great end to your article. We know that because we dont bring anything financially to a conference, we will likely be left out of anything great. Thats ok. Nothing we can do about it. We all know ISU will be fine no matter where they play. Games will still be at Hilton/JTS.

I just hope the Big 12 implodes (as it is obviously just a matter of time) and we can all move on quickly.

Obviously we won't be fine no matter what conference we play in if we can't pay the bills.

Sure, we'll continue to exist, somewhat... but at what level? What sports will have to be cut. What facilities will never be built, etc. It does matter... a lot.

Do you really want to see the day where there's 10,000 fans in Jack Trice each Saturday cheering us on against Wyoming?

I think ISU fans would come out to watch ISU football no matter who we play or where we are. The day event of an ISU football game has completely changes our landscape of what college football is about in Ames.

Its not like we havent had 100 years of football to actually win something and prove that we belong in a bigtime football conference.

Take away the Big XII and in 10 years we're a school like NIU, at best. Which is bad for football and absolutely destructive for every other sport.

There will be nothing like an ISU vs. Wyoming matchup in basketball.

Time will only tell. The big east would be a good option for us, we just need to be in a good conference that has stability (aka not with Texas unless they have some serious attitude changes in days to come.) At the end of the day just get ready for each game one day at a time. I think we will not know anything for at least a week or maybe longer or I will be very wrong who knows.

In Mark Cuban's article he specifically mentions that adding schools only makes everybody's cut less. That is the exact situation of the Big 10. As much as I would love not being in the MWC, going to the Big 10 only dilutes the pie for everybody else in that conference. We bring nothing in terms of TV revenue and with Nebraska already being a natural rivalry with Iowa, we don't even bring that any more.

I'm going to post this in here only because somebody else mentioned academics/loss of prestige in the world of academics if we lose a "Big Conference" affiliation.

Has anyone else but me noticed that EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL in the BIG has either/or, OR BOTH, a medical school and a law school!?

That folks, equals a lot a lot of $$$ from donors, alumni, and even just 'plain ol professors that buy season tickets just because they work there' that sorry, a vet/ag/engineering school like ISU or even KSU can't offer. This--at least to me--means that if the BIG were to expand, it would look to expand to somebody like that. ND is ND, and of course is always a prime target, but somebody like Pitt makes more sense.

As much as this this conference alignment bull@$%^ is about TV revenue and football, it's heartening at some levels to see that at least some people are realizing that this could be very bad for ISU's academics. In a separate thread, people pointed out the "other schools" that don't have a big time college sports program that are in the AAU and have great academic programs are doing just fine academically. Well...most of the other ones are Ivy League Schools or Polytech Schools that are in a league of their own when it comes to academics. Not calling ISU's bad at all (I'm at Civil E by Degree from ISU) becasuse they are frankly awesome, but just saying...college sports nowadays support the rest of the school, and to lose the $$$ associated with a big conference could be a massive downer when it comes to other things, such as academics.

Somebody mentioned in another thread how KU is being a "sneaky ba$****" in all this. Well look at their base - medical schools in three cities (KC, Wichita, Salina), big city association in KC, big time college basketball program, recent national championship in said program...of course people are going to look at them over even KSU or ISU.

Sorry this is a long rambling post, but just something that's been on my mind. Frankly, I'm borderline sick of all this college sports garbage. I'll die bleeding cardinal and gold of ISU, but when all this other stuff won't stop swarming, it's getting hard to even stay focused on sports.

I just want it to end.

This is not correct. Purdue has neither.
