It hasn't affected SMU's endowment or their prestige. SMU, according to US News, is ranked higher than Minnesota, MSU, Iowa, Iowa State, etc...

Unpossible. I've been told by experts that if ISU doesn't find a way into a BCS conference their academics will suddenly become worse than Memphis...

All that matters to me at the end of the day in football is being in an AQ league.

Look at the Big East schools: they catch a lot of hell for being poor at football, but they still have an AQ bid and have been competitive in their bowl games.

I'd be just fine with a Big East/Big 12 hybrid if it got a place at the AQ table and reasonable TV coverage.

ummm I guess when we were talking donors I was assuming we were talking about Athletic donors not University.

Plus the endowment of the University doesn't really get spent. So it wouldn't necessarily lower from when it was in a legit conference. I would be intereste in seeing what has happened to the rate of donation to SMU on the academic side since the break up.

I knew what you meant. I've read a lot of posts by people worried about prestige and academic funding and the impact the conference affiliation has.

I have never heard of SMU basketball, all I know about them is they were cheaters in Football and received the Death Penalty for their ways...Iowa State basketball is our best chance to remain nationally relevant bar an unexpected invite from the big 10, that being the case - I believe we need to put all of our focus on becoming elite there, stay with KU, Louisville, maybe add a Memphis, etc. Not ideal, but the best of the least options that APPEAR to be available as a course of action going forward

You have never heard of Jon Koncak??

If we go to some Big East/Big 12 hybid with Cincinnati et al...I will still watch if it is on which it won't be very often because the Dbag conferences will take up all the slots. But I won't drive 7 hours to be there. Attendance will slide, donors will dry up, it's the end of football at ISU at this level.

Basketball will be fine but it doesnt require the big dollars football does.

Football provides the athletic department with the revenue it needs to make ALL the other programs in the athletic department relevant. Without significant football revenue, ISU doesn't have the money for top shelf coaches, facilities, or scholarships. Without money to support schollies for student athletes (about $6 million a year) sports need to be dropped, and there is always Title IX to keep in mind.

And contrary to what people believe, the Big East has every game available on TV now (or ESPN3) so a combined league would get on TV especially since NBC is wanting to bid.

Right. A reformed Big Tweast is a million times better than the MWC. Not sure what people don't get about that. It's not as good the Big 12, but it's not a death knell. Somewhere in between.

I'm talking college football period. Not just ISU football.

Somewhere between a death knell and the Big 12 is not good. I hope I am wrong, I just think we got a big problem if we have Cincinnati, SMU, TCU, and Houston on our home schedule. The money difference is going to be staggering between us and say Iowa or Okie State. We will be left behind very quickly and we are already behind anyway.

Exactly. We will be in an AQ conference. All you have to do is look at the BCS website to understand that is not going away. It is virtually IMPOSSIBLE. And as for TV. The Big East has decent TV coverage now. I can see their games in Missouri. AND NBC will be an additional player this time around.

The overreaction on here with incomplete information amazes me. We will most likely have more money from TV contracts than we have had in past years. We have not had over $10 million, but will prob have that in the merged conf. Just because it is less than what is projected if the Big 12 as is remained, people panic. But it is not the end of the world.

Newsflash: the monetary gap between us and Iowa has never been close, yet we compete with them on a regular basis, and Okie State had nothing before T. Boone.

If we're on a level playing field with our conference, and that conference has BCS access, we're going to be competitive.

We pack the house for some of the worst teams on our schedule most years. Our worst attendance is often for Big 12 games. I don't think the casual ISU fan cares that we're playing Cinci, SMU, etc, so long as we're winning.

Probably true. They tailgate and get tickets to the game.

Forget conference realignment....I want to see some thread realignment. The only thing outpacing AD"s flirting with other conferences is some random poster who fills the need to share their $.005 conference realignment theory.

I still think that we take a big recruiting hit in the new Big East and that makes it much harder for us to compete.

We'll still have multiple games in Texas on a regular basis. We'd also add games in Florida, an area that we have recruited heavily in recent years. The recruiting for those Big East schools that had been in C-USA a few years back really improved just by virtue of having the BCS tag.

People great overestimate our historical recruiting if they think that we won't be able to recruit in the East. CPR will make his living on finding diamonds in the rough whether they are in Texas, Ohio or wherever.

I could see some scenarios where we may actually do better from a fan standpoint if we are winning 55% to 60% of our conference games rather than 30%. We may not have a $35 million TV contract, but we could actually develop more of the casual fan if we are winning. The road to a BCS game would certainly be much easier.

On the other hand, I can see us losing 10,000 or so casual fans who attend games now who will just switch to the Hawks since the "second class citizen" or "little brother" argument will actually be true. I think we lost a LOT of these kinds of fans already during the 80s and 90s, so my sense it that it has been mostly our core fan base and very little 'bandwagon' fans in the stands in the past decade.

I wouldn't love being a part of the BigXII/BigEast survivors like I loved the old Big 8. It would be a pretty pale football league, that I fear the Super 4 conferences would try to strip of its AQ status as soon as they could. Truth be told, I haven't loved life in the BigXII with the ever shifting balance of power moving increasingly to the South and UT specifically as the victor and its egregious spoils.

However, I think that the basketball in such a conference would be pretty darn good and may be able to earn some decent money.

I understand what your are saying, but i seriously doubt our attendance would increase winning a conference like the MWC as opposed to our B12 attendance.
