This, except it isn't quite as far as the Riviera. They have a great couple of golf courses and the shuttles to all other palace resorts are included as well as your all-inclusive payment. We honeymooned there and came back for our five-year anniversary. We also stayed at the Aventura Palace down a bit further in the Riviera Maya, which is adult-only.

Riviera Maya Hotel | Aventura Spa Palace | Riviera Maya, Mexico

We liked it so much down there we bought a discounted 25 weeks... :)
My wife and I honneymooned there too in 2007. Best part about our trip was that they overbooked our type of room that we requested. When we got there they were already out of our type of room so they upgraded us to the presidential sute on the bottom floor. P.A.R.A.D.I.S.E! We took a tour of the Mayan ruins at Tulum that was pretty neat. Only problem with the resort is that there is no sandy beach. The area around the resort that meets up with the sea is rocky. There is an inlet that you can go snorkeling and such things though. We just spent A LOT of time in the pool not getting too far from the swim up bar. Yeah, the stuff about being all inclusive and adults only were spectacular as well.

This is probably correct

Room-With that we got a great room that I guess would cost at least $150/night by itself considering how nice the room and the rest of the place was including the pool.

Dining-3 meals from one of 8 different restaurants. I'm just guessing that I would have had to pay about $80/day to eat the same type of food. $160 for 2.

Drinks-I drank about half beer/half mixed drinks. Probably about 15 drinks per day. I don't know what these would cost at non all-inclusive but I can't imagine those being less than $30x 2 people. $60

So used about $370 for the $500 we paid. There is still something to be said for knowing what your expenses are going to be. Next time we go we have a penthouse condo on the list that has it's own private pool and for 2 couples it would be a little cheaper than an all-inclusive. I think most people stop at the local wal-mart and just max out the beer/food so that they don't have to leave the place. I would think if you could find a bunch of couples to go you could save a lot of money by renting a condo/house. Of course then you have to deal with other couples.

Just for comparison sake, the last time we were in Vegas we got a cabana and the minimum we had to spend on food/drinks was $500 between 4 people. We hit that in about 4 hours.

BTW-Corona sucks donkey and shouldn't cost more than a dime.

Very true. Margaritas were like $1.25. Mixed drinks werent much more. We ate out every meal and drank at bars and bought drinks individually and ended up coming out way cheaper than an all inclusive when we were on Isla Mujeres.

We did it to have variety and to get to see and know the island a little better. The all inclusives we did were nice, but mainly for how easy it made things. With all inclusive you are pretty much just paying for the convienence.

We have been to Riveria Maya (secrets excellence) on honeymoon. It was nice but I would do Jamaica. We have been to Sandals in the Bahamas and Negril. We are going back to Jamaica (Whitehouse) this time. Jamaica is by far our favorite, water, beaches, people. Can't go wrong.

Debating going to the Pelican Bar in Jamaica. Google it if you want to see something unique.

Riu Palace in Riviera Maya-Cancun-Crazy awesome bartenders and really good food at the resturants you make reservations at, the buffet is marginal. Great beach and the ground floor rooms rock. Staff has a lot of activities for some fun during the day(ping-pong, water volleyball, scuba training) Wet bar in the rooms are insane, they have four Bottles hanging on the wall(vodka, Rum, Tequila-DUH and I don't remember the 4th) and you can use them up and have them refilled every 10 minutes if you want.

NOW Saphire in Riviera Maya-Cancun-Really cool place and I wish we just stayed on the resort instead of the excursions. Awesome food everywhere we went on resort, only filled wet bar once a day so I relied on the bars at the resort a lot but they had great service. Staff was great as were the beaches. Only 20 minutes from Airport.

Both can be booked rather easy thru Apple Vacations. No, I don't work for them just very happy with their service.

Isn't marginal the definition of buffet?

Moon Palace in Riviera Maya is freakin incredible.

We stayed at the Cozumel Palace resort and had a great time. It was a VERY nice building with a smaller feel than some resorts. It depends what you are looking for, though. We partied a lot while there so if you are looking for family friendly, this probably isn't the resort for you. Not much for the kids at this one. Check out Trip Advisor reviews. It gets high ratings. Also, note that there isn't a beach since it is built next to a reef. Great snorkeling right off the dock, though!

We also took the ferry across to Playa Del Carmen. You can walk to the Ferry dock in town and feel safe doing it. In fact, you can walk anywhere along the ocean and into town for dinner, drinks, shopping etc. It is a great location. Anyway, Palace has another resort in Playa Del Carmen and you can use anything there as well with your bracelet from the Cozumel Palace. The Playa Palace is two Resorts off of the Ferry dock and you can literally walk up the beach to get there. We didn't stay there but it seemed nice as well. We used their pool and had many drinks after doing some mainland activities one day.

Again, check out Trip Advisor. Note that some people will never be happy but if the overwhelming majority are positive reviews, I think you are safe to assume it is a good place to stay.

Have fun!

This is so true. I've used tripadvisor on nearly every trip to multiple countries and if you pick one in the top 10, it's hard to go wrong.

last time we went to riviera maya we went a little different route. have done all inclusive a bunch, it's the same thing whether you're in mexico, DR, Jamaica, etc. the only real difference is the amenities and how much you want to pay for luxuries. we wanted to get away from the more touristy spots and just do something new.

In January we went to Akumal Mexico, on the Carribbean about a half hour south of Playa. rented a car and drove down from cancun. initially i was a little concerned, after all it's mexico, but was surprised to find that it was really no different than renting a car in the states (get the "walk away" mexican car insurance though). driving was a little weird at first, but not bad at all. We rented a condo on "Half moon Bay" for a week. it was very nice and was super inexpensive ($125/night.) this included house keeping, fresh water, towels, etc. all the typical things you get in a resort/hotel as far as your room goes. it was right on the beach with an awesome reef about 100 yards out. We're talking world class snorkeling and we didnt have to do it with a group or pay because it was right there. for meals out we went into town (a beautiful fishing community) where there was a bunch of great locally owned restaurants all with amazing food. we went grocery shopping at the local supermarket, bought fresh produce and goods from the outdoor market in town, and interacted with the people far more than you ever would in a resort. like I said above the town is known for having incredible reefs/fishing, and there's a dive shop where you can go out and scuba if that's your thing. there's also a lagoon right there where you can see tons of turtles, manas, and aquatic life. there's plenty to do. but at the same time its a small community so it's quiet on the bay and there's tons of beach to relax on if that's more your style.

the nice part about this is that we had a car, so we could do what we wanted whenever. we went up to playa and shopped/ate, went down to tulum and checked out the ruins, and saw more of the countryside and real mexico than we ever had before going the all inclusive route. there really wasnt ever a time when we didnt feel 100% safe. there were a lot of other americans around and the local folks were great. I will be doing something like this again. just because it's a little different and I had such a great time.

I want to say it cost the wife and I about 2k for a week. that's flights, rental car, room, and food. no it wasnt all inclusive, but we had an a great time.

but if you're set on all inclusive, go with iberostar

My honeymoon will be early/mid September and we are just getting ready to talk to a travel agent. We are looking at Mexico or Jamaica. Two different couple friends of our have done the secrets resort riviera maya.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

In all seriousness, will I be able to watch the Iowa-Iowa state game in Mexico. That's probably the most important thing

Leaving for the wonderful palace resorts in Cancun in 24 days. Have been to them all, and love them. If you like service, go there.
