If you talk small Iowa towns you have to throw Beaconsfield, IA in there. For being so small it has a decent amount of history. The first Hy-vee store was there, it is also the hometown of astronaut Peggy Whitson.

My dad's old deer hunting group used to run deer right through the middle of the town.
Beaconsfield, Iowa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And while we're at it I might as well throw in the other towns in Ringgold country.
Tingley, Ellston, Benton, Delphos, Maloy, Redding... all really small towns, Tingley the biggest with like 150 people. The rest are easily under 75.

I suppose Kellerton is to big, I remember go through it the way to wrestle at Mount Ayr.

Austinville. A Bend in Old HWY 20 (now 57) between Aplington and Ackley. There's a church, elevator, and a photography studio that I think every Sr in Butler county had their sr pics taken at. One of the houses in the middle of "town" town is actually an acreage with livestock

I grew up next to Garden City. It was once featured in a 2 page picture in national geographic magazine. But, with about 100 people living there, it isn't as small as some of the towns noted here.

I think you might find a sign to GC by Radcliffe or McCallsburg.

A few years ago, somebody actually built a new house right next to the elevator. Not sure what they were thinking.

Vandalia...its just east of Runnells. A church, an old schoolhouse not used since the 50's (legend has it there is still an apple on the desk) and about 6 houses, many of them are solely inhabited by cats.

Schley - At one point it had two bars, a cheese factory and few houses.

La Motte, Iowa :)

Why would anyone ever go to La Motte, IA.

FWIW Breitbach's was the place in Balltown that burned down twice almost exactly a year apart if I remember right. Awesome food.

Also Kalmes Breaktime Bar and Grill is in downtown Dubuque Kalmes Restaurant is in St Donatus.

Lavinia, IA used to be interesting. 4-5 houses on highway 20. There was an old drive in theater along time ago and grownig up the marquee was still standing there out in the middle of nowhere in a field. They recently tore it down to build a hog confinement.

Varina, IA is also interesting for the childish jokes we used to make about the name.

Knoke, IA also deserves mention since the town sign was a big green sign you'd expect to see on an interstate that said Knoke next 3 exits (all three tiny streets).

The Juntion 21 bar out in the middle of nowhere by Centralia (which is no where itself) is another.

Basically if you leave the major roads in Iowa these places are everywhere.

Truax. A few miles east of Bussey, site of today's fascinating "heat burst."

Had an old aunt who lived in Truax. She smelled like beets. Truax makes Bussey look like New York City.

Bolan, IA had its entire population (16) on the Letterman show back in the late 80's or early 90's.

Melrose is lovely but a little large for this. How about the Davis County version of Paris, get a little culture? Iconium is sort of a boom town now with Honey Creek, lol.

Has anybody read the Munson articles in the DMRegister about Mt Sterling and its attempt to unincorporate. Its covered like some kind of tragedy or metaphor for rural decline and loneliness. I think the reality is more like its hard to get people to show up for meetings so often.

Hell, anywhere in SW iowa, Just go to Creston, probably one of the biggest towns in SW iowa. Lots of people dont even know where that is (or have maybe heard of it) After that pick a road, and any town along the way, Kent, Shannon City, Arispe, etc..

Yep, you know you are in a rural area when entire counties only have 5,000-7,000 people.
