I don't know how you can start a story off with "We've heard there's not much defense played in the YMCA Capital City Basketball League." Then immediately follow that with, "That must come from people who haven't seen Iowa State's Tyrus McGee block a shot or Georges Niang finish at the hoop."

Exactly what i was thinking when i read it.

This is my fourth time watching this season, and I watched most of last season as well. I think it's difficult to take too much from these games, as the effort level of the players varies greatly from week to week (and sometimes from play to play). For example, there were plenty of times tonight where someone would play no defense on one possession and then be playing full tilt the next possession.

What I enjoy most about going is watching the newcomers who we haven't seen play a lot yet. Some of the things I've seen Clyburn do are incredible. Obviously you don't score around 70 points without a heck of a performance. Lucious has a real ability to take over when needed as well. Tonight's surprise for me was Dorsey-Walker, and how improved he looked compared to the first night he played. Real progress has been made with his confidence or comfort level. Unfortunately, I haven't seen Okoro play yet, and I missed his game tonight. Looking forward to Wednesday for that.

Watching these games is just pure fun, especially when stuck in the middle of the sports void that is July for a non-baseball fan.

Ken: I've watched Patch.com play more than anybody else, but have been at every game night. Trends? Kind of a tough one, but I'd say what I've noticed most in McGee's steady play and leadership. He's not a loud mouth; he leads by example, playing hard every minute he's in.

Niang, to me, has been the most impressive of the freshmen. He plays hard and has a lot of pieces -- strong inside, nice outside shot, decent defense. He's a big personality and I hope over time he learns to use that to his advantage by working the refs for him rather than against him. He does a fair amount of talking to the officials.

Finally, Clyburn's total points are more impressive than his shooting percentage. That said, he has a beautiful fall-away jump shot that's almost impossible to defend. You could see at Sunday's game that Patch was making a concerted effort not to let him have any uncontested jumpshots. He had very few, but still managed 28 points.

Hope this is of some value.

So, does the season just wind down with guys taking vacations and getting less serious? Or does it dial up for the last few games, especially for guys who are trying to make sure they get noticed? My guess is that the "stars" will dial down and the "hopefuls" will dial up. And this could make for some sloppy last games. Somebody convince me that I should still try to go.

Cycsk: Go. The first game today is first-place Patch.com vs. second-place Capital Ortho. McGee and Niang both play for Patch, and I don't see either of them winding down --ever. They've got too much pride for that. McBeth and Gibson play for Capital. If that ain't enough, a Royce White autographed basketball is being raffled for free. As a reminder, games tonight -- at 5:30, 6:45 and 8 -- are at Valley High School and NOT Valley Southwoods.

Capital Ortho also has Ben Simons and Gary Ricks from Drake and Patch has Richard Carter from Drake (exciting point guard). Unfortunately Cap. Ortho will be missing Gabe Knutson who is off enjoying the ESPYs. Still should be an entertaining game.

Have a feeling we could be seeing these two teams again in the championship, on Sunday. You know if Knutson will be back?

I'll be there tonight. Hopefully most of our players will be there. I don't think Lucious (in Milwaukee I think) or Booker (in St. Louis I think) will be there but I have my fingers crossed that everyone else will be there, especially Clyburn.

Game 1 halftime score: Patch leads Capital City Ortho 67-54. Most Cyclones were late arrivals, missing about 5 mins. Gibson is 2-4 from downtown (no, really!). McBeth had a couple of nice acrobatic traditional 3 pt plays. McGee and Niang playing well for Patch. My first time seeing Okoro. I like his build for a frosh, and he moves well with or without the ball.

2 games in a row like that for Percy, right?

Babb, Long, and Lucious

Watched the last two games last night. Babb impresses me more and more. He seems to be in great shape and even stronger than last year. He also seems to have a toughness about him. If I'm in an alley fight and could pick only one Cyclone to help me, it would be him. He is really aggressive at times, but he stays in control and seems really smart, making good passes, making cuts, giving direction on the floor, and even knowing what to say (and not say) when the refs make bad calls.

Naz Long is also impressing me. He has a tremendous court presence, both on offense and defense. He always seems to be thinking about the extra thing that could help the situation (pressuring the ball as they bring it upcourt, seeing a play develop, and calling out instructions). He also is tough, always trying to smother someone on defense, and seems always to have something to say. It remains to be seen if he can keep his aggressiveness and mouthiness under control. Lucious didn't play tonight, but he seems to have a similar aggressiveness, but with more experience in keeping it under control.

I really like the attitudes and approach to the game from Babb, Lucious, and Long. I hope that Babb and Lucious will help make sure that Long doesn't let himself get out of control. These guys seem to bring a seriousness to the game (and probably to practice) that forces everyone around them to work harder (or get really annoyed). Hoiberg must have seen their toughness when he was recruiting them and obviously knew how to manage it with Babb last year. Can't wait to see Lucious (and Long) on the floor for Big 12 games.
