Found out my daughter's 5th grade teacher played the Iowa fight song in class

So my daughter has a typical tavernhawk for a teacher. She is a UNI grad, but professed die hard Hawk. Found out yesterday after the game that on Friday when the kids were wearing their team's colors, she told the kids with ISU stuff on that they would be "sad" on Monday because Iowa was going to win. She then followed that up by playing the Iowa fight song in class.
My initial reaction was to do something (complain to the principal) and get her reprimanded for segregating a group of students like that, but I like her as a teacher so far and good teachers are hard to come by these days. I'm also sure she didn't mean any harm and was just displaying her natural tavernhawk behavior.
What I've decided to do is to have my daughter approach her tomorrow at the beginning of the day and say in an innocent voice "At least you'll probably be happy next weekend when UNI beats Iowa".

What say you CF? Should I have her hand slapped or should I just have my daughter tease her with the UNI statement? Maybe you have a better suggestion?

This is 5th grade in Waukee schools.

My initial gut reaction would be to tell you not to be a little ***** about it, but let me think on it some more.

yeah...don't disagree with you, thus I said I back off getting her hand slapped. I think the UNI comment is appropriate

That would be my reaction.

Nothing wrong with some good natured ribbing between fans. That's kinda what the rivalry is all about.

Would have been nice though if after doing it she said something to the affect that they should remember it's just a fun game between two good schools and may the best team win.

I went to school in 5 different towns in Iowa when I was growing up. Every school had fun w/ the ISU-Iowa gameweek which included teachers playing their school's fight song, having "choose your team" dress up days, etc.

Most of my teachers were Hawkeye fans and teased us about being ISU fans, but we saw it for what it was...teasing and nothing more. It's not like your kid is going to fail her class for being an ISU fan.

While she didn't tell me why until yesterday, my daughter did get in the car on Friday after school and asked me if she was going to be sad on Monday.

Pic of daughter's teacher? You know, to help determine the proper response and whatnot.

When your daughter walks in the classroom on monday she should play the isu fight song on her phone or ipad or whatever she has available to do so.

I've come across similar things with teachers in Des Moines.

Ultimately, these type of hawk fans are best ignored...they simply aren't worth wasting you time or thought on.

If you can get your daughter to go say that to her, I think it would be an appropriate solution to the problem. If the teacher has any sort of negative reaction to your daughter once she says it, then maybe I would consider saying something...

This is what I was trying to say, only said better. If she rolls with that comment, the original teasing was good-natured. If she doesn't, she's a "tavern hawk".

Do you have something that plays the ISU fight song like a card or bottle opener? You could have your daughter show the object to her in class.

I had a math teacher in HS who was a big Iowa fan. The math teacher who had a classroom right next to him and went to ISU taped a bunch of newspapers to his door as a reminder of who won the game. I thought that was pretty good and he kept it up all day. Maybe you could just give a newspaper to your daughter and have her leave it on her desk.

I think complaining about the teacher to the principal would be a little overboard.

I don't know, but I find it a little perverse in both ways...a teacher telling young children they will be sad...and the plan to have your daughter zing the teacher with something she probably doesn't understand yet. I would let it go...the heavy set, pleasant faced teacher will be plenty sad and embarrassed on Monday as it is.

Just make sure she walks into class decked head to toe in Cardinal and Gold clothing with a big grin on her face.

My cousin and her husband are both Iowa grads who live in the suburbs of Louisville. The teachers of their oldest kids made them create fan posters showing support of their favorite team, as long as it was Kentucky (not even Louisville) the week of the opening rounds of the NCAA tourney. The kids refused and made posters supporting the Hawks and the Cyclones respectfully. Brought me a smile

You'd think with the dire straits that the UNI athletic department is in, that the teacher would be more supportive of her alma mater than anything. There in lies part of the problem of UNI "fans".
