Well there were too many unsigned people at that point, we knew that we would move down some.

KU got another big commitment today. Joel Embiid, a 7-footer, who top 100 now, but will reportedly be in 4 or 5 star in the final rankings (he is in his second year of organized basketball). Very much like Cato. Was obviously a bit unknown until recently- the type of big we dream of finding first. KU will have at least 4 top 50 guys, and 5 in the top 100. Even with the standard bump in recruits rankings for committing to KU, that is a good haul.
However, KU having a top class is not new, so until there is more than 1 ball and 5 spots on the floor, there is diminishing returns.

Looking over the class if 2013 in the Big 12, many of the more highly rated guards are smaller. KU has Connor Frankamp (6-1 SG) and Frank Mason (5-11 PG). OU has Jordan Woodard (6-0 PG). KSU will sign Marcus Foster (6-0 PG). Stevie Clark (5-9 PG) is likely to go to Baylor or OU.
This makes getting a pg like Custer in 2014 much more desirable.

With the talent we lose and the uncertainty coming in. Seems like we will take a step back and KU will take a big step forward.
We will take a step back losing 5 seniors, but I doubt KU will take a big step forward due to that class (how much of a step forward is there?). When was the last time KU did not have more than 5 highly ranked recruits on their roster?
Diminishing returns.

This could be said every year.

I was just going to say this. What earth-shattering news, Kansas has a bunch of top 50 recruits coming in. In other news I hear the wardrobe of choice at KU games is still the never out-of-style sweater vest/collared shirt combo.

KU is going to be pretty good this year, but I think they will be better next year. This could be Bill Self's best class ever, and there is a good chance Perry Ellis and Ben McLemore will be around next year, too. Most sites say Embiid will be in the top 20 when they release the new rankings.

That is what I was getting at. I think that will be a special class for KU beyond their regular.

Could be, but that does not change anything. Diminishing returns. Only one ball and 5 spots on the floor. You do not get bonus points for having all 5 of those spots being occupied by talent from the same class.

As for the class, it is likely to be very good. If it is unusually good, even when normalized for KU standards, it is due to how it fits together. I am always a bit skeptical with 6-1 average athletes and sub-6 foot guards, plus every year there are centers who are highly ranked due to their raw potential that do not live up to their top rankings.

KU will always have great recruiting classes. If ISU can get classes like the 2013 class on a regular basis, then I would sign up for that easily

I agree that nothing is guaranteed with Freshmen. I'm just happy KU pretty much locked up a top 3 class in November, and the top three remaining recruits in 2013 all have KU on their short list.
