Not only do I have a very large (over 1000) Lp collection, I also own a record store in Des Moines. As a huge Stones fan some of my favs are Exile On Main Street, Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers. Other stuff I like Television--Marquee Moon, Lou Reed-Transformer, Pink Floyd-Animals, heck I could go on all day!!!

I'm guessing you have Goats Head Soup. That has a cool cover too. That's what is really attractive about vinyl for me, the art. I love all the stuff Hipgnosis did for Pink Floyd but one of my favorites they did is Wishbone Ash's Argus. Do you have a copy of that?

Country Joe MacDonald - "Paradise with an Ocean View."

It was the first save the whales album and had whales "harmonizing" in the background...

It truly classic underground hippie album

Better than Electric Music For the Mind and Body?

I have not read this thread carefully, so if I repeat old info, excuse me. There will be a store opening in Ames in early May called the Vinyl Cafe at 303 Kellogg Ave. It will sell all kinds of records (along with coffees). Initially the store will have about 4,000 records on display with 10,000 more in the back of the store. So if and when you record lovers get back to Ames, here is a place to go.

Yes I have that. I also have a copy for sale at the store--Red Rooster Records in Des Moines.

Definately a great cover--don't care to much for that LP musically though (just my opinion). My favorite LP cover of all time is King Crimson-In The Court Of The Crimson King.

I'm bumping this thread, as it might be a good one to keep going for the offseason...

So, I got a pretty nice tax refund this year, and I've been holding on to a good chunk of it as fun money. I've decided that I'd like to expand my vinyl collection with it. My main target:

A UK first-pressing of the Beatles' White Album in mono

Anyone have this? How much did it set you back? Where do you recommend finding a good clean copy? I find most of my vinyl in-person or through Discogs, but for something that'll likely be as pricey as this, I'd like to use something more high-end with less likelihood of getting burned; any suggestions?

i value this one so much it's framed and in my wall! I even have to put special insurance on it as my home owners policy won't cover it.

I'm ZERO help w/ your question but I noticed you had the cover of Meddle as your avatar awhile back? That's actually my answer to the OP. I have three copies one of which is UK first pressing. Got it at a record shop in Boston in '95.

This thread has a direct tie to ISU for me. My first day on campus I went to the record store (one on L.Way) they had a copy of the Live at Pompeii LP (with the mosaic skull on the cover). Didn't buy it, came back the next day to buy it...it was gone.

I love my UK press of Meddle, matrix runout of A-7/B-6. It's flawless other than a small skip during "Echoes". I compared it to an early 80's Capitol pressing, and it smokes it. What are the other pressings you have?

I've also got a MoFi pressing of Dark Side, and a Columbia half-speed mastered version of Wish You Were Here. They're both a little brighter than the UK pressings, but the vinyl is much better and plays extremely quietly, and they can be had for a lot less coin. Highly recommended if you come across them.

That'll set you back a pretty penny.

I bought a copy at Co-op in Ames in the late 70's/early 80's when it was reissued as a limited run. It's SO much different than the mix on the Stereo. The counter person asked me if I was aware it was mono because they'd had somebody bring back the mono copy of Sgt Pepper when they discovered it was mono. I told him that's the only reason I'm buying it.

US Capitol & US Harvest, both unremarkable (one was a gift). Is your MoFi DSOTM semi-translucent?

Not many vinyl albums but here's a link to the album covers of my Laserdisc movies that are like album cover art but movies:
LaserDisc Database - Collection > All > By Title

Nothing past 2000...because that's when it stopped. Not my entire movie collection or favorites because plenty are replaced by DVD/Blu Ray if there's no reason to keep the LD. Includes the best legal theatrical home versions of Star Wars trilogy.

My middle child bought me a Bose d.j. turn table/receiver/speakers last summer for the 500 odd vinyl albums and 45's I have collected in my lifetime. As far as a favorite, I would have to say Queen's second album Queen II is my favorite with a close second going to Led Zepplin IV.

As for 45's go, I would have to say 'One Tin Soldier' by Coven (featured in the movie Billy Jack) - oh my am I dating myself or what???

Also, in my collection I still have the very first album I had ever purchased - Queen's album Jazz which featured a poster of 'The Nude Bicycle Race' which I got a hold of before they pulled them off of the shelves...vinyl and poster are both in excellent condition, I might add.

I had no idea there were so many vinyl fans in here. I've kept my old vinyl from 60's thru 80's. Am now gradually upgrading to 180 or 200 gram recordings where possible. Other favorites I've been trying to locate mint or near mint copies.

I've also been upgrading my equipment as well, albeit slowly. Wanting next to go to a tube pre-amp.

Here's a couple of my favorite vinyl web sites for those who haven't run across them:

Great 180-200 gm vinyl source:

Vinyl Records | Vinyl Record Albums | Vinyl LP Records - SoundStage Direct

Anyone bothering to take time to chick out this thread are probably already aware of it, but National Record Store Day is less than two weeks away. This link provides a list of all the new stuff being released to celebrate. Call your local store if anything catches your eye.

I've only been collecting for about a year now, but my favorite find so far is the Dutch import of Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen. My Holy Grail is Wildflowers by Tom Petty. That ******* thing is nowhere to be found. The last record store clerk I asked about it actually laughed at me.

Thanks for the link. Some interesting stuff coming out. I noticed Iowa's own "GONN" have a release. They are/were a mid-60's garage/psych group out of Keokuk. Their "Blackout of Gretely" is legend, and well deserved, too.

Since you have an interest, I'll ask you.

Where can I get my laserdisc player repaired?

I've tried numerous times to contact RCA about it and can't get anywhere. The crazy part is, I'm pretty sure it's just the on/off switch that's the problem (won't power on) and not the mechanism itself.

I have some really choice laserdiscs (including Star Wars) and others that I wouldn't mind seeing again.

I have one of Bob Dylan when he toured Australia with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers that they said would never be released on another format and I've yet to see it in another form (that's really hard to believe BTW).

Any ideas?
