Testifying
Saw the Fabulous Thunderbirds perform at some casino way back in the day. A few hours after the show, the lead singer was walking thru the lobby and I asked him if he wanted to get a drink. He said sure. I told him it was a great show, so its on me. We had a couple Jamesons and chatted for a while. Super nice guy.

I get around
Thought I'd repost this since I've added so much and made corrections to my original post:

Buddy Ebson of the Beverly Hillbillies at a grocery store in San Fransisco. Also we are camped beside Brittany Borman and her family at Adventureland Campground in Altoona. Brittany is a USA Olympian javelin thrower and she's here for the USA Track and Field Championships. Her Dad, sister and grandparents are here to see her perform. Edit: she won the senior women's javelin throw tonight by 14 feet further than the second place lady.

Also met Olympic gold medalist Alexi Grewal at the 1984 Coors International Bicycle Classic in Copper Mountain, CO. He won the stage we were at and autographed a Coors Classic T-shirt for me and I still have it.

I think cykofan is the only person that celebrates Renaldo Nehemiah or Harvey Glance.

I admit they aren't household names, at least not now. But in his day Nehemiah was one of if not the biggest names in track, dominating the 120 high hurdles from the mid to late 70's and the first hurdler to break 13 seconds. Not the biggest names I've talked to (I talked to Muhammed Ali on a street corner in downtown Chicago in 69), but as an Ankeny guy I got a kick out of watching some olympians knock it around our city golf course, and figured other Ankeny golfers would too.

My dad sat next to Marty Schottenheimer on a plane ride to Denver. My parents were also about 5 feet away from Michael Jackson in 2005 at some store in Vegas. I personally have never got close to a real big time celeb.

My dad is one of the people who fly everywhere for work. He has a celebrity list so big that he can't remember. But he sat next to Barack Obama on a flight before he was president.

Ran into Chris "Jesus" Ferguson at an airport once. Shook Barry Larkin's hand after running into him during induction weekend in Cooperstown last summer. And obviously being in Cooperstown you walk by/see SO many great baseball players. It was awesome.

Back in the day of my AAU basketball playing days, my team went to a camp hosted by the Timberwolves. The camp was a 3 day camp that concluded with a Timberwolves v. Bulls game. The night before the game, the team decided that we wanted to go out for pizza. We ended up in some hotel restaurant that was known for pizza apparently. So we are seated, waiting for our pizza to come back when all of a sudden we see the entire Bulls team (Jordan era) walk past. Obviously as 9 year olds, we couldn't hold back and sprinted out to meet the team. After pictures the team headed up to their rooms, and we returned to wait for our pizza. Just as our food was being served to us, Scottie Pippen walks in and sits down with us. He ate pizza with us and told us stories of how he wished he would have had the opportunity to attend camps as a kid and wanted us to thank our parents for giving us the opportunity to be great.

I doubt I will ever have another moment with a celebrity ever again, but I wouldn't trade the one I have for anything.

I'm with you Cykofan. Nehemiah was right there with Edwin Moses at the time dominating the hurdle events. RN was on the cover of SI when it was a big deal and him going to the NFL was the equivalent of Usain Bolt signing with a team in the NFL. RN held the World Record in the event for 10+ years.

Let's define celebrity...

While celebrity usually means fame, imo there's worthy and not so worthy celebrities. While there's no doubt Kim Kardashian is a much bigger celebrity than Renaldo Nehemiah, what has she done.? I did some research on Nehemiah and while I remember him as a great hurdler, he was probably one of the greatest athletes of any era. He's cnsidered by some to be the greatest hurdler of all time for several reasons. He broke the world record 8 times in 2 hurdle events. In the 110 meter highs he was the first below 13.2, 13.1, and 13.0. His 12.93 in 1981 was actually against a slight wind, and wasn't broken until 8 years later by 1/100 of a second with a slight tailwind. 12.9 wasn't broken until 2006 and 12.8 still hasn't been broken. Only 8 men have ran faster times than Nehemiah in the last 32 years, and almost all of them in the last 10 years when the fastest hurdlers discovered they could lower their times with 7 steps to the first hurdle instead of the standard 8. And Nehemiah was out of hurdling for several years during his prime to play with the 49ers. He was the only 4 time winner of The Superstars, a competition that pitted the big stars of the various sports against each other. I remember enjoying watching it in the 80's to see how the best football, baseball, track, tennis players, etc, did against each other. He was so dominant in his first 3 that they banned him for a couple of years and when he came back he won it again. When we talked to him he was so friendly and watching him play golf he seemed like a great guy. Now I know Kim Kardashian is a much bigger celebrity than Renaldo Nehemiah, but I know I'm much more excited about meeting Renaldo than I would be Kim.

Thanks drlove. Edwin Moses is probably a bigger name in track, but Nehemiah should be right there with him, even though his carreer was shorter due to the 49er stint.

Back in 1990, was at the same function as the great Matt Blair. Stood there and talked to him for a long time. Being a huge Iowa State, and Viking fan I was in heaven. Probably my favorite Viking of all time, oh yeah a pretty dang good Cyclone also

Nothing too exciting here:

I saw Michael Gross from Family Ties at the Worlds Fair in Vancouver in 1986.

In the 90's when the Bears had their training camp in Platteville, I saw Phil Jackson in a car driving away.

In the 90's I was at Wrigley Field, stood next to an older person. I was honked at by a golf cart driver, who drove ahead a few feet, only to see that Haray Caray got in the cart.

In 1997, I spotted Tim Floyd at Hickory Park while eating there.

In 1999, On a flight from Chicago to Cedar Rapids, I sat next to Tom Harkin in coach.

In 2004, Vince Vaughn sat in our section at Wrigley Field. He high-fived my friend on the way out.

A few years ago, my wife had her picture taken with Lizzy Hale of Halestorm at a bar in Cedar Rapids before their concert.

In 2011, met Penn and Teller after one of their shows in Vegas. They were pretty cool and signed everything and took pictures with everyone.

Met the following people at Penguins Comedy Club before/after their shows: Tom Green (who fistbumped my wife), Tom Arnold, David Koechner, and Kevin Farley.

A few weeks ago we met Jackson Galaxy from My Cat from Hell, at one of his speeches.

Most importantly, also a few weeks ago I met Hoiberg, Fennelly, and Rhoads on the Cyclone tour.

RN was a huge name. That name brings me to 2 other names: Roger Kingdom and Greg Foster.

That post is too long. I have to admit, I didn't finish reading it. But I think to summarize, he's more deserving but less of a celebrity than Kim Kardashian.

All four members of the Christian band Jars of Clay attended a college in southern Illinois. The summer after my senior year in HS, Steve Mason, one of the guitarists, was a counselor/worship leader at the camp I attended. He was the date of our entire cabin of 10-12 girls for the end of the week fancy dinner. Jars' debut album came out the following year.

When I worked at a radio station in Omaha, I was the one that had to call guests that were going to be interviewed. (not book them) One evening, the host hands me a scrap of paper with a number and says "Here. This is our guest for tonight." It's Steve Allen, the first host of The Tonight Show. While I was only 23 or 24 at the time, I knew who Steve Allen was. (He was going to perform at one of the casinos in CB) Unfortunately, during the interview, his call dropped, and I had to call him back. He was very nice about it.

Husband has had better "run-ins". George W, when he threw out the first pitch at the CWS in 2001. He came up through the press box, and he got to shake his hand. Dr Laura kissed him on the cheek when she was visiting Omaha and did a show from the radio studios. Robin Yount. I'm sure I'm missing some, but he's snoring away in bed now.
